Robin Michelle Wilson (b. 1984) is an educator, children's author, and multidisciplinary visual artist. Working in abstract, collage, and fiber, Robin's practice analyzes African American family traditions, historical lineages, and cultural inheritances through applications of memory, research, and storytelling. Robin is known for her crocheted story quilts that are a departure from conventional quilting practices. She is a member of the Great Lakes African American Quilters Network and her works have been displayed throughout Metro Detroit.
She is a native of Inkster, Michigan. In her early twenties, Robin was appointed by Inkster City Council to serve two consecutive terms on the Leanna Hicks Public Library Commission, becoming the youngest person to serve in that leadership capacity. Recently, she was selected as the inaugural Leanna Hicks Public Library Artist-in-Residence, which is a six-month artist residency that will begin in January 2025. During her residency period, Robin will work on fiber artwork that is a part of a series of works that she is creating to honor her maternal family line. She will explore artistic approaches that combine audio recordings of family members, family photos, along with her fiber artwork to create a multisensory storytelling experience.
A 2022 United States Fulbright Hays GPA Brazil Fellow, Robin is a graduate of the University of Michigan Dearborn. Her children's books include "Mama Got Rhythm Daddy Got Rhyme" (published 2009 & 2021) and "Jazz-A-Bet: An Original Jazz Alphabet" (published July 2024). She currently teaches as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy.
