04-078; One of the Berry Boys
1910-1919
Janet E. Finley Collection of Quilt History Photographs
Linn Creek, Missouri, United States
Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) c. 1911
Photographer: James Bruin, Linn Creek, Missouri
Size: 3.5" x 5.5"
"Who is this? One of the Berry Boys but which one? I think Sidney," is written in pencil on the postcard's verso. The photographer's name, James Bruin, and location, Linn Creek, Missouri, is printed in small type along the outer edge. It is the only example in my collection of a real photo postcard photographer being identified. Baby Sidney shows up in the 1920 Federal Census as being nine years old, and the second to the youngest of five children of Alexander and Mollie Berry, all born in Missouri. Baby Sidney's fancy wicker carriage has a Nine Patch quilt, alternating with setting squares, draped at one end.
-- With permission of the publisher, excerpted from Janet E. Finley, Quilts in EveryDay Life 1855-1955 (Schiffer Publishing, 2012).
