Beauty in the Home
800 Designs for 49c in News Wonder Package

by Edith B. Crumb
This department seeks to give assistance to all who are interested in beautifying their homes and will be glad to answer questions pertaining to interior decoration. In order to serve all who, seek advice promptly no more than three problems will be discussed in any one reply. Readers are invited to write to this department as often as they wish, but to limit each letter to three questions. State your question clearly write on only one side of the paper, enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope and address Beauty in the Home department, Detroit News. Letters with their answers will be published for the benefit of all homemakers but names and addresses will not be made public.

HERE is a jolly little elephant—but he is just one of the many, many patterns which will be a delight to children and contained in The Detroit News Wonder Package.

Just think how a little boy would love to have this elephant transferred to a lamp shade for his room; or perhaps on a piece of paper so that he could paint it; and isn’t it the kind of a design that would be very easy to follow?

In one of the smaller illustrations is shown a mischievous kitten having lots of fun with grandmother’s ball of yarn that perhaps she has been planning on using for a little sweater for some little boy or girl. That little kitten would be just right for the decoration of a romper suit or the lower part of a bib.

FAMILY OF CHICKS.
The other small illustration shows a proud mother chick with her little family and isn’t she just right for the decoration of a lamp shade, chair or table in the children’s room?

There are giraffes, ducks, geese, whales (blowing gorgeous bubbles), just anything that one could possibly imagine that would interest a little boy or girl.

Of course these juvenile patterns constitute only a small portion of all the designs in The Detroit News Wonder Package for there are over 800 in all and each one may be used 12 or more times.

There are designs for the decorating of furniture, the embroidering of rugs, draperies, dresser scarfs, table runners, clothes—well, almost anything you could think of in the way of making your home or your clothes look their “Sunday-go-to meeting best.”

The method of transferring the designs is so simple that the children may be taught to do it in just a few minutes, for all that is necessary is to dampen the design and then rub it with the bowl of a spoon or other smooth object.

800 DESIGNS FOR 49c.
It is hard to believe that over 800 patterns (including 12 old-time quilt designs) may be purchased for the small sum of 49c but it is true and I do hope that you are going to be one of the fortunate ones to take advantage of this offer.

If you would like you may call for it at the main office of The Detroit News, Second and Lafayette or The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the General Motors Building or the Majestic Building, and the price will be but 49c.

If you wish to have it mailed to you the price will be 56c (to cover postage) and all you have to do is fill out the coupon which is in this column for convenience and send it to the Beauty in the Home Department, The Detroit News. Please send stamps or a money order and not coin through the mail.

Quilt Club Corner.
WELL, here I am at last standing in line to enter my name as a member of your Quilt Club.

I read all that the Corner has ever had in it, even before the radio broadcasts; but could not make up my mind to send in my name. I thought the desire would soon pass away, but the busy bees buzzed so loudly and there were so many of them that I could not resist the temptation, so fell into their net and have finished all the blocks for the Dresden Plate but don’t see how I am going to sew them together that they will be even. But a beginner has to make mistakes, so hope to find a way by the next radio program.

Have cut out Mrs. O. D. MacL’s method of waxing thread, also the number of the needles she is using for quilting, as I suppose that will be next, but hope to have someone help me when I get that far, as the blocks have a white background.

Well, I hope I may enter the Quilt Club without showing a sample of my work. Will stand by until the bees come to my aid. Did you say “Come in,” Oh! Thank you!
MRS. C. L. E.

No, there isn’t much to do but follow along with the throng when it comes to quilt-making, for it really is irresistible and one of the most fascinating occupations you could possible select. You are certainly methodical in your quiltmaking and I am sure your work is just as true and even as it can possibly be. Samples of work have never been asked for.

I READ the Quilt Club Corner every day and enjoy it very much. I like to piece quilts and also do the quilting. Haven’t been able to do any this winter.

Am anxious to try the “Trip Around the World.”
MRS. E.G.

Once you have seen that “Trip Around the World” quilt pattern you won’t be able to wait any longer to start your quilt-making. It will make nice spring and summer pickup work.

MY note for the “Trip Around the World” quilt pattern was in the mail a few minutes after your broadcast and do hope we will be able to have it real soon.
MRS. R. H. R.

Well, you won’t have to wait long now, Mrs. R. just watch the papers and you will soon see a notice of this pattern being ready.

MY mother who is nearly 75 years of age has pieced 19 quilts in the last two years. She is piecing the Flying Cloud from the News pattern and is anxious to get the Double Wedding Ring.

We both enjoy the Quilt Club Corner and the radio talks very much.
MRS. O. O. S.

Your mother is certainly a busy little lady to make all of those quilts in two years; and I am sure they are very beautiful. It is nice that she is able to occupy her time in this way.

OH, yea! come on with the “Trip Around the World” right now. I have made quits since I was only five years of age.

I have an old quilt pieced by my great grandmother. As far back as four generations we have all been quilt-makers and I have a whole trunk full and am still making quilts. When I fill one trunk I start another.

Perhaps no one has a quilt that has been so dear to her as one I have. It went through the awful Dayton, Ohio flood with me; but we are both O. K. yet. It is old, old, old; but what a history it has!
MRS. D. C.

You must have some treasures with all of those quilts in trunks. Hope you use them and enjoy them for if taken care of they will enhance with use.

I AM one of the first members of the Quilt Club Corner but have not written in for a long time. I am getting along nicely with my Horoscope quilt and enjoy the broadcasting over WWJ every Wednesday and the first thing I look for in The Detroit News is the Quilt Club Corner which I enjoy immensely.

The Horoscope is the second quilt I ever made, my first being a Detroit News Dresden Plate.

I am sending in my vote for the “Trip Around the World” pattern in hopes that the Quilt Club Corner will last for a long time.
MRS. Q. C. C.

Now, Mrs. C., you must not wait so long before writing next time. it is a pleasure to keep in touch with one of the very first members of the Beauty in the Home Quilt Club.

AT a gathering of Toledo ladies some days ago we were speaking of quilts and the Dresden Plate pattern came up and one of the ladies told me that if I sent to the Quilt Department of WWJ I could get information, so I would like to have to tell me where I can get the pattern and how much I have to send. She also told me of the broadcast at 11:45 Wednesday mornings and you may be sure I will listen for any information but being an invalid I do not get out to see anything new. I am anxious to know if the pieces are sewed on or pieced together.
MRS. G. E. P.

All you have to do, Mrs. P., is to send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with a request for your pattern and you may get as many as three in one envelope. Be sure to watch for the “Trip Around the World” next week for you will certainly be delighted with it. It is so gay and pretty, and lots of fun to make.

Quilt Club Corner Changes Radio Time
WOULD you like to have letters to the Quilt Club Corner read over the radio? If so, write immediately so that they may be here in time for the broadcast which is at 10:30 every Wednesday over WWJ. Listen in for your own and others and then write and tell the Corner how you like this idea.

Horoscope Quilt Patterns No. 26, 27, 28
THIS week, there are to be three leaflets of the Horoscope quilt instead of just one as usually issued. This is because on May 3, there is to be a leaflet containing the pattern for the “Trip Around the World” quilt and as so many were anxious to receive this before the completion of the Horoscope quilt, it has been prepared. These three leaflets will be send to you upon receipt of your request to the Beauty in the Home Department, The Detroit News, accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Watch the column next week for the notice of the “Trip Around the World” pattern and send for it as quickly as you can after you see it in order that you may be among the first to start this fascinating quilt. I know you will like it.
