Brother-Sister Quilts-Leaflet No. 8

By Edith B. Crumb.

Here is the perambulator which is to be used so many times on the Sister quilt.

We need six of these in the body of the quilt and then many of them appliqued on a border strip. You might be working on your strips in your spare time. The length of the strip depends upon the size of the quilt. A suggested length in 96 inches from tip to tip of mitres. The suggested width is 92 inches from mitre to mitre. Place the perambulators as close as you desire. A space of six inched between them has been suggested. In spacing them, though, place one at each end first and then divide the remaining space. Have them all facing the same way so that there seems to be a continuous parade of them around the border.

Choose fast color material, of course, possibly medium brown for the body with dotted yellow, red or rose for the hood. Wheels are a little darker color than body. The hubs are appliqued or are embroidered dots.

Baste the hood in place, then the body and lastly the wheels. Repeat the block six times for the body of the quilt.

Now get five square of black-ground polka dotted or sprigged material.

For the top row of quilt body seam a polka dot square on the right side of the first doll block. Seam second doll block to right hand side of polka dotted block. Seam polka dotted block to right hand side of second doll. Seam third doll to right hand side of polka dotted material and that makes the first row. For second row seam a pram block to right hand side of polka dotted block, then polka dotted block to right side of pram, then pram to right side of polka dotted block, then polka dotted block, then polka dotted block to right hand side of pram. Now seam the two strips together, placing the first polka dotted square in second row directly under first doll of first row.

If you cannot get a pink and white polka dotted material, use any white material with a small pink design in place of polka dots.

The hoods for the prams (or perambulators) may be all of the same material or of entirely different patterns, but should all be delicate in coloring.
