Kittens and Scotties Appliqued on Quilt
By Edith B. Crumb

Cats and dogs don't always get along happily in the same household but you never saw a group of more contented kittens and Scotties than those on a quilt made by Mrs. Elise Kansier, 5303 Iroquois avenue.

The quilt made for a child's bed, is green and white blocks. On the green blocks are kittens outlined in a running stitch in black and on the white blocks are Scotties in percale and gingham appliqued patches. No two Scotties are alike.

The border, back, and binding are also green to match the kitten blocks. A running stitch in black outlines all of those blocks and forms a fence around the edge of the quilt.

This is another quilt for you to look for at the show. I know you like to have certain ones in mind when you get there so that aside from seeing the whole exhibition you may have the fun of looking for quilts which you have already read about.

Another little girl is going to enter a quilt. She is Bernice Benz, 80 Scott blvd., Mt. Clemens. Bernice is just 10 years old. This is the letter she has written:

"Dear Edith Crumb: I have made a quilt and I am going to enter it in the Detroit News Quilt Show. It is a juvenile pattern and is made of dollies and will fit a twin sized bed. There are 18 dollies in the whole quilt. The dollies are put together with pieces of bright cloth. I started this quilt when I was three years old and finished it when I was six. I also helped with the quilting."

Now, isn't that a nice letter for a little 10-year-old girl to write? And aren't you going to look for Bernice's quilt? Of course you are, and you are going to see how she sewed when she was just beginning and how she improved in three years. The first few stitches may be a bit uncertain but you would expect that from a little three-year-old.

Surely there must be more little girls who have made quilts or tops and I would like to have letters from them telling me all about the quilts.

Don't forget to send in your coupons right away. I am looking for one from every one of you.
