Shasta County Veterans Affiliated Council Banquet
Shasta County; California; United States
Scarlett was invited to the SCVAC banquet on March 8, 2025 where she received a Certificate of Appreciation for her work as the Vice President of Region 8 of the American Merchant Marine Veterans. She brought Frank Mendez's Quilt of Valor to collect signatures from veterans, their families and other Shasta County supporters of veterans. Because of his WWII merchant marine service, Frank joined the AMMV Golden Gate Chapter in 1993. In 2011, Frank was appointed a member of the Board Of Directors of the Korean War Memorial Foundation . The Foundation was tasked to raise 3 million dollars to build a Memorial Honoring that Forgotten War at the Presidio in S.F. In 2016, a beautiful Memorial was completed at the Presidio overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge.
The pieced center of this quilt was donated to the Frontier Quilters of Anderson, CA, some time ago. When Scarlett asked them for a patriotic quilt top, this pieced top was given to her. She added the dark blue eagle print border to make the quilt the appropriate size for a Quilt of Valor. After Kimber Rickey did the machine quilting, Scarlett made the binding from the leftover border and backing fabrics and finished the quilt. Dorinda Goff, Chair of the Shasta Piecemakers, a Chapter of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, gave Scarlett a Quilt of Valor label to sew on the back of the quilt.
Scarlett took this quilt to the Shasta County Veterans Affliated Council banquet on March 8 2025 to collect signatures.
At an informal dinner held the night before the unveiling of the merchant marine plaque at the WWII memorial in the Presidio in San Francisco, Scarlett awarded this Quilt of Valor to Frank Mendez, a WWII merchant marine.
