Features or notes about the quilt's appearance, materials, or construction:

The following information was supplied by the quiltmaker: If your quilt is based on a traditional pattern or an earlier quilt, what is the name of the pattern? "Crib quilt with appliqued and embroidered pictorial elements on 'watercolor' background and appliqued writing." Other techniques used include: "Color wash or water color style." How did you choose the materials used in your quilt? Batting is 80% cotton, 20% polyester, "warm and natural." "My grandmother left me a box of 2inch cotton squares she had saved for a quilt. When I saw a colorwash quilt I knew what to do with the squares and began collecting cotton fabrics to make more squares. My son suggested a method using very light fusible facing to make sewing the squares together easy, fast and accurate. Threads were recommended by fabric shop owner." Commemorates her Grandmother. Also "in response to contest theme 'If My Quilt Could Talk.'" How long have you been making quilts? "This was the second quilt I made. I began in 1994." How did you learn to quilt? "Reading quilting books, taking a quiltmaking class at the fabric store and by trial and error." What was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? "As soon as I read the theme of the contest, 'If My Quilt Could Talk,' I thought of Grandma's lullaby: My quilt could sing her lullaby to the baby it covered. I could immediately see the quilt in my mind. I was challenged to figure out how to realize the image. Also $10,000 is a good incentive." Has being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? "Winning gave me confidence that even though I'm a beginner I can make a successful quilt. As a painter (ex-painter) it has renewed my interest in image making. Placing little pieces of colored fabric in a design is very much like painting and I especially like the tactile quality of fabric. The pace of quilt making is soothing and has taught me that I have more patience than I realized."
