Description of quilt:

Describes the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and lists the NSDAR members as well as their revolutionary ancestors

Essay:

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded October 11, 1980. To be eligible a woman must prove blood line back to an ancestor who gave military service or helped the American cause in the Revolutionary War. National Headquarters of the Society is in Washington D.C., U.S.A. Heritage Chapter, Calgary, was founded October 7, 1982 and was the first Canadian Chapter. Regent of Heritage Chapter Ruth Morgan (Mrs. W.J.) had the idea for the chapter to make a quilt. Thirty two members embroidered their name and the name of their Revolutionary Ancestor on a block. Chrissy Smith (Mrs. A.N.) on a visit to California obtained a kit to make a tactile flag of the U.S.A. To correspond with this Anna Harder (Mrs. R.C.) designed and stitched a tactile Canadian flag. These two flags for the centre of our DAR quilt. The red and blue coloured fabric with star design was ideal for the backing of our patriotic quilt. The blocks were assembled and on March 18, 1987 fourteen members gathered to quilt.
