When the fire came, she instructed the kids to lay their wool blankets in the water stored in wooden barrels. They ran to the bare-plowed hill and stayed there. They put my grandfather who was a baby in a hole in the ground and the dog sat on top of him. The dog was burned but my grandfather was unharmed. The word went out and two different \"Cuddle Quilts\" were made for her by two different quilt groups that she belonged to at the time. This one was made by members of the Northwest Quilting Connection, a group she helped found in the mid 1980s. She served as president from January 13, 1990-January 11, 1992. She also served as their newsletter editor for a number of years.\r\n\r\nWini died on August 23, 1999 one week after her 82nd birthday (August 16, 1917) at home in a special bed in the living room with her son Gary and myself by her side on Lopez Island, Washington.
