One explanation for signature quilts is that many families were moving west in search of land and a better way of life during this time period. Before they left, friends and families would sign blocks to send west as a remembrance. The blocks were then put together in a quilt once the family arrived on their new homestead. It is difficult to say whether that is the case here but perhaps it is. The prints are mostly brown with one double pink and two brown striped fabrics. My working theory but I have not proven it yet is that Anne C. Adams is Anne Caroline Evans and she switched her first and middle names because there were too many Carolines in the family. \r\n\r\nIn census records Caroline Evans and Anne C. Adams are the same age and that links the 2 families. So, Thomas Adams (4a) is married to Anne C. Adams (3d) and their children are: Edward F. (5a), Mary Adelaide (5b), Eva (7a), Myra (3b). I have not found William Adams for certain.\r\n\r\nSo, to repeat an earlier email: George W. Weightman (4e) is married to Annie Elizabeth (Evans) Weightman (2a) with Mary Elizabeth Weightman (6f) as their daughter. Gaar), great grandmother (Hattie Gaar), and Hattie's brother (James E. Gaar). The Gaar (Gar, Garr) family emigrated from Bavaria aboard the Loyal Judith, landing in Philadelphia in 1732. The family settled in Virginia, where some still remain. Others moved west. Edwin Gaar (b Nov 12, 1840) was in Sabine Co. MO when he married Virginia Ann Sparks (b Nov 8, 1853). Their third child, Hattie, was born in Wilson Co. KS (Dec 23, 1874). My understanding is that the family came to Oregon in a covered wagon, date unknown. They were in Oregon when Hattie, who had married George Ruef, gave birth to her first child, Earl, on Sept 5, 1892 at Suver, OR. They eventually settled in Independence, OR. Whether the quilt was made before or after they got to Oregon is unknown. Cream, browns, pinks.\r\n\r\nAnne Olsen, of Laramie, WY, is known for her work of restoring and finishing old quilts and quilt tops.\r\n\r\nOn the label Anne wrote: \"The 32, 11 1/4\" blocks used in this quilt were from two different sets of blocks obtained from different sources. One set was bought from the Kirk Collection, Omaha, Nebraska in October 1992. The other was from D&J Antiques, Merino, Colorado in February 1993. The blocks were all the same size and same age (ca. 1880). I picked 32 of the 44 available blocks for this quilt and sold the other 12.\r\n\r\nThe blocks were set on point and sashed. The off white fabric and brown print used in the cornerstones of the sashing and the border are new. The batting is Hobbs Heirloom (80% cotton and 20% polyester).\r\n\r\nThe blocks were assembled by machine and the quilt was quilted by hand by Anne Olsen, Laramie, Wyoming. It was finished in January 1996.\r\n\r\nSize: 86 X 103\r\nWyoming Quilt Project #677\r\nPattern: Album, Chimney Sweep\"\r\n\r\nHowAcquired: Donated to the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum by Anne Olsen of Laramie, WY.\r\n\r\nOwnership/History: Original maker s of the blocks unknown.
