He came to America in 1860 and settled in Ripon, WI. In 1878 he married Pauline Kahl (1852-1882), who was born in Germany and moved to Wisconsin in 1860. Herman and Pauline had eight children: Ida (1875-1882), Henry (1879-1882), Olga Zobel Hancox, Clara H. Zobel Baker, Erna I. Zobel Leutscher, Lillian A., Edgar H., and Otto J.
