This highly-prized, imported cotton chintz was readily available in the fashionable port city of Philadelphia—especially to someone like Ruth, whose husband Matthew McConnell was a wealthy merchant and stockbroker. \r\nAbout the time that Ruth finished this quilt, a virulent Yellow Fever epidemic broke out in Philadelphia, spreading like wildfire. Between August and November 1793, 5,000 Philadelphians died—about a tenth of the population. Another 17,000 fled (including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and members of Congress). Any family with the means left the city. Matthew and Ruth McConnell and their sons 12-year-old Robert and 7-year-old Matthew, were among those who fled the epidemic. Ruth was pregnant. Her daughter Julia was born at Beverage’s Farm in the countryside outside of Philadelphia on September 10. \r\nMany years later, Ruth’s daughter, 55-year-old Julia McConnell Miles, wrote an inscription on the back of the quilt. Julia’s words read: “The work of my Mother Ruth McConnell & her cousins Hannah and Mary Parry in the year 1793 previous to my birth (September of that year) during yellow fever - Julia M. Miles May 14th 1849.” Julia clearly wanted to make sure that her mother’s name and the quilt’s story—including its ties to American history and her own birth—would not be lost to memory.","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/30-26-21/ruth.1.jpg"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/30-26-21/ruth.1_zoom.jpg"],"Detail 1":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/30-26-21/ruth.inscription.jpg"],"Detail 1 Caption":"Inspription message","Detail 2":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/30-26-21/ruth.center.jpg"],"Detail 2 Caption":"center","Detail 3":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/30-26-21/ruth.corner.jpg"],"Detail 3 Caption":"corner","Detail 4":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/30-26-21/ruth.side.jpg"],"Detail 4 Caption":"side","verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Brenda Applegate","dateverified":"2012-03-30","dateverified_era":"CE","Pattern":"CHINTZ APPLIQUE QUILT","Maker":"[\"MCONNELL, RUTH\"]","Date":"Pre-1799","legacy_kid":"58-99-111","project_id":"30","form_id":"26","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-25 23:45:45","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:12:17"},"sort":["CHINTZ APPLIQUE QUILT"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"ua1eWZEB8akQsUweR4Cw","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"11-37-2465","InstNameF003":["Massachusetts Quilt Documentation Project - MassQuilts"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Massachusetts Quilt Documentation Project, MassQuilts; Boston Museum of Fine Arts","InstInvContrNumF004":"2510","InstInvContrNumF004a":"MFA# 1972.910","OwnershipF082":"Public Museum, Library or Institution","OwnerNameF082a":"Boston Museum of Fine Arts","OwnerPhoneF088":"617-369-3707","OwnerAddressF083":"465 Huntington Ave.","OwnerCityF084":"Boston","OwnerStateF086":"Massachusetts (MA)","OwnerZipF087":"02115","OwnerCountyF085":"Suffolk","OwnerCountryF086b":["United States"],"OverallWidthF12a":"84.5","OverallLengthF012b":"82.25","OwnerNameF010":"Crewel","QuiltTopF054":"Fifield, Mrs. Mary and her daughter Mary","MakerGroupNameF097":"Mrs. Mary Fifield and her daughter Mary","NoChildF116":"daughter was the mother of Samuel Adams, Governor of MA","AcquiredF058":"Gift","DateQuiltF023":"Pre-1799","LayFormatF024":"Wholecloth","ConstrucF038g":["Embroidery"],"ShapeEdgeF013":"T-cutout","OtherShapeEdgeF013a":"Four Poster, 4x4","FabPrintF037":["Solid/plain"],"UniqueF037b":"twill weave","PredomColorsF014":["Blue or Navy"],"QuiltTechF049":["Hand quilting"],"DesignF052a":["Single parallel lines"],"NumStitchedF050":"7","WidthF051a":"0.5","ConstrucBindF046":["Separate binding applied"],"MatUsedF044":["Cotton"],"FabStrucF045":["Plain weave"],"FabFiberTypesF040":["Cotton"],"OtherFabF040a":"muslin","ColorBackingF040b":["Cream"],"DescBackF043":["Different fabrics"],"TypeInscripF019":["Signature"],"ContInscripF020":"Wrought by Mrs Mary Fifield 1714 assisted by her daughter Mary, mother of the late Samuel Adams","LocInscripF022":["on back"],"MethodInscripF021":["Ink"],"OtherDamageF016a":"This quilt is not structurally sound.","AltNameF011":"Whole Cloth","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/11-37-2465/2510.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Donaldson, Beth","dateverified":"2014-03-27","dateverified_era":"CE","OtherExDateF023d":"1714","InvenNumF075":"2510.jpg","ImageConF075a":"Quilt","ImageTypeF076":"Color","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"Boston Museum of Fine Arts","CopyRestF080c":"Please contact Boston Museum of Fine Arts for permission to publish this image.","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Digital Humanities and Social Sciences at Michigan State University, Michigan State University Museum","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","Pattern":"CREWEL","Maker":"[\"FIFIELD, MRS.
