learn to quilt at my home one day a week after school. She did very well and made a baby doll quilt by hand and then learned to run the sewing machine. We became warm friends.\r\n\r\nOver a period of time I had made quilts for both of Margaret's sisters at her mother's commission. During 2011 Margaret's grandmother commissioned this quilt for Margaret. I adapted the Irish Eyes Pattern to a 12\" block and picked Margaret's favorite colors. I wanted to create a quilt that would last through her young adulthood. Every stitch in this quilt was placed with Margaret in mind. According to the seller, the quilt was from an old estate in the Harrison/Lewis counties area of West Virginia and was made by Ada Romine Coburn (1860-1946) when she ws 9 years old. According to my research, Ada (Adaline) Romine was the daughter of Clement N. Romine (1823-1900) and Mary McWhorter (1836-1918). Ada was born on April 24, 1860 on a farm in Harrison county, West Virginia. She married Homer Coburn (1841-1922) on April 20, 1910 in Harrison county, WV. She died on May 13, 1946 at Mt. Claire, Harrison county, WV. She did not have any children. While she may have started this quilt when she was 9 years old, it is likely she completed later since "1883" is quilted on the quilt. The nine-patch blocks in this quilt are only 1.24 inches and the individual patches are only about a half inch. These small patches and blocks seem consistent with a nine year old girl who was making a doll quilt. I have spent significant time hoping to validate it for my Oregon Trail Quilt Project. But, was unable to.\r\nUnfortunately the names are cross-stitched in black thread as their husband's first initial-Mrs. F. McGrew, Mrs. J. Thompson, etc. This makes it hard to research.\r\nOthers are identified as Aunt Deming, Aunt Benjamin, Ant Risley, Aunt Pelton. Most often, these are the unmarried women. Another clue to look for in relationships are the matching fabrics that may exist in the quilt-here in the second row Aunt Benjamin and Aunt Deming have the same fabrics.\r\nThe same fabrics also appear in the 3rd row-Mrs. B.C. Lord, Mrs. L.S. Watts, Mrs. H. Baldwin.\r\nLookin at all the names, they appear to be English in origin, perhaps back east-New England or later, Ohio. There are Russells in Ohio who were well known for their craftsmanship-they made elaborate doll houses, which are in the major museum collections in Ohio and New York.
