I decided in Feb 1985 to do something with it, hence the quilt","QuiltHistF059":"The muslin coverlet began when my aunt as a young maiden in 1924 embroidered a central floral basket encircled with embroidered ribbon and embellished with 3 designs for the pillow area. This was to be a bed spread but, unfinished and stained she gave it to me several years ago to do whatever I wished! This year I designed additional rambler (or bullion) rose bouquets, ribbons, and vines hiding the stains. The machine quilting by me was a result of time element. I set a goal of finishing it for Mar. 23-85 for Iron County Quilt Show. Started it Feb. 85. I invited my 81 year old aunt to come to the Quilt Show and surprised her with the finished \"heirloom\". Aunt Alpha Benson Vanderpool says she embroidered 3 such Rambler Rose bedspreads while boarding in a home with older ladies who prodded her into the handwork. She doesn't know what became of the other two projects she did while a young teacher at Munising, Mich. I am thrilled with this as a legacy especially since I was able to come up with a cover up design to make it a worthwhile endeavor to make it presentable. Matching the border binding was a 2 state hunt: finally I bought unbleached muslin; brewed up instant tea and instant coffee with alum and vinegar and dyed the muslin binding to match the bedspread!! It's very close! I've always admired bedspreads embroidered, quilts in craft catalogues and now I have one.\r\nAunt Alpha said, \"I'm really glad I gave it to you and you made the most of it.\"\r\nI completed my embroidery and decided the 100% muslin embroidered impractical as a single layer bedspread. It took one hour to iron the old muslin top and it had to be done while quite damp and on thick towels around the embroidery. Now since it is machine quilted by me it is puffy and natural wrinkles are less obvious, and suitable for muslin. A matching muslin dust ruffle will skirt the bed on which this muslin quilt is use.","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/12-8-5533/MichiganMSUMuseum-a0a2l3-a_8092.jpg"],"AccessF080":"Restricted","CopyRestF080c":"Michigan State University Museum","verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Donaldson, Beth","dateverified":"2007-10-15","dateverified_era":"CE","CustomsF131":"Participated in many people designing squares for special quilts for wedding gift and for Iron Co. 1985 Centennial.","function":"Image - medium display (250-550 pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University, Michigan State University Museum, Alliance For American Quilts","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"StillImage","InvenNumF075":"85.634","ImageConF075a":"Quilt","ImageTypeF076":"Color","SourceF077":"Slide","HolderF080a":"Michigan State University Museum","CreditLineF080b":"Courtesy of Michigan State University Museum","DistribRestF080d":"Michigan State University Museum","DisplayResF080e":"Michigan State University Museum","LicenseF080f":"Michigan State University Museum","Pattern":"BASKETS","Maker":"[\"BENON, ALPHA\"]","Date":"1985","legacy_kid":"1E-3D-247","project_id":"12","form_id":"8","owner":"0","created_at":"2020-04-25 18:17:20","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:04:56"},"sort":["BASKETS"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"GK1YWZEB8akQsUwezije","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"5-2-1157","InstNameF003":["Illinois State Museum"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Illinois Quilt Research Project","InstInvContrNumF004":"NS-101","OwnershipF082":"Private","OwnerCityF084":"Peoria","OwnerCountyF085":"Peoria","OwnerStateF086":"Illinois (IL)","OwnerCountryF086b":["United States"],"DateDataF006b":"1989-07-29","OwnerNameF010":"Flying Geese","AltNameF011":"Rambler Rose","OtherExDateF023d":"1940c, estimated by IQRP","DateQuiltF023":"1930-1949","OverallLengthF012b":"89 inches","OverallWidthF12a":"71.5 inches","SizeBlockF027":"13.5 x 13.25 inches","SashWidthF032":"4 inches","BindWidthF047a":"1/4 inch","NumStitchedF050":"6","NumStitchF051":"7","WidthF051a":"2.25 inches - split on the diagonal","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","ConstrucF038":["Machine Piecing"],"LayFormatF024":"Block pattern","BlockStyleF030a":["Same block throughout"],"ArrangeBlockF028":"Straight","NumBlockF026":"20","FiberTypesF035":["Cotton"],"FabricTypeF036":["Broadcloth"],"FabPrintF037":["Solid/plain"],"PredomColorsF014":["Green","Cream","Pink"],"DesignF052d":"Triangles. Car was a 1959 Rambler bought from a man named Klatt or Clatt who had it in his back 40 for years. She was told the car ran, was for sale and was cheap and she needed a cheap car. The car was purchased and driven home. After the quilt was found, it was washed. It was hand tied and wool and she has kept it for 40 plus years. The quilt owner has just started quilting but has a mother who always quilted giving quilts to the kids and grandkids when they got married. Her mother is no longer able to quilt so the women in the family got together to make a quilt as a gift for a grandchild and then the owner's son when he finished dental school. It is now a new family tradition.
