Made up of varying sized tobacco premiums. The Colorado Quilt Council, in documenting this quilt, described tobacco flags as \"premiums given to tobacco users circa 1915 or earlier.\" These premiums generally used as the subject flags from countries around the world. Many quiltmakers collected the flags and made quilts from them. The flags in this quilt are embroidered together to form the quilt top. The quilt includes twelve flags at 11'\" x 18\", fifty-nine flags at 5 1/4\" x 8\", and twenty-four Indian designs.\r\nThe accession records on the Tobacco Flag Quilt include a sample of a reproduction flannel fabric of the premiums, provided in 1996 to the museum by Mrs. Billie Dyer, who purchased the fabric from the R & R Quilt Shop in Amarillo, Texas. The fabric includes the following description on the selvedge: \"During the early 1900's until about 1925, flannel flags were offered as a premium in cigar boxes. The flags were from all of the nations at that time. quilters liked to collect the flags, and sew them into quilts, mostly joined and tied, rather than quilted. We hope you enjoy the flags, and make a historical quilt for your heirs. Judy Rothermel.\"\r\n\r\nOwnership/History: Made from tobacco premiums in 1915 by Barbara Brumbaugh's grandmother for her first grand child before birth. Tobacco flags were premiums in cigar boxes offered to tobacco users c. 1915 or earlier. RMQM founder Eugenia Mitchell bought the quilt in the late 1960's. Reportedly, the owner had to sell it for grocery money ($60.00). Barbara Brumbaugh was married to the sheriff of Idaho Springs, CO. Eugenia Mitchell may have purchased the quilt from Chris Brumbaugh.\r\n\r\nLocMade: unknown\r\n\r\n","ReasonsF060":["Personal enjoyment"],"QDesignF060b":["Unknown"],"PresUseF062":["Museum collection"],"OwnershipF082":"Public Museum, Library or Institution","OwnerNameF082a":"Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum","OwnerCityF084":"Golden","OwnerStateF086":"Colorado (CO)","OwnerCountryF086b":["United States"],"SourceInfoF088b":"RMQM","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/24-20-170/RockyMountainQuiltMuseum-a0a0e7-a_12371.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Roxburgh, Karen","dateverified":"2008-08-08","dateverified_era":"CE","Pattern":"TOBACCO FLAG QUILT","Maker":"[\"CHRIS BRUMBAUGH'S, GREAT GRANDMOTHER\"]","Date":"1901-1929","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University, Michigan State University Museum, Alliance For American Quilts","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"StillImage","ImageConF075a":"whole quilt","ImageTypeF076":"Color","SourceF077":"Digital","CreditLineF080b":"Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum","CopyRestF080c":"RMQM","DistribRestF080d":"RMQM","DisplayResF080e":"RMQM","LicenseF080f":"RMQM","pbd":"RockyMountainQuiltMuseum-a0a0e7-a","legacy_kid":"4E-86-30","project_id":"24","form_id":"20","owner":"0","created_at":"2020-04-25 22:10:09","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:10:02"},"sort":["[\"CHRIS BRUMBAUGH'S, GREAT GRANDMOTHER\"]"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"gK1gWZEB8akQsUwejrKs","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"12-8-7663","InstProjNameF003a":"Michigan Quilt Project; Detroit Historical Museum Collection","InstNameF003":["Michigan State University Museum"],"InstInvContrNumF004":"85.2029","InstInvContrNumF004a":"51.194.1","OwnerNameF010":"Tobacco Ribbon block","DateDataF006b":"10/17/1985","QuiltTopF054":"Davidson, Julia E.","IfQownerF007b":["Received as a gift"],"LocMadeF057a":"Bay City","ProvCountyF057b":"Bay","ProvStateF057d":"Michigan (MI)","DateQuiltF023":"1901-1929","DateFinishF023b":"1904","GenderF098":["Female"],"CityF106a":"Bay City","CountyF106":"Bay","StateF107":"Michigan (MI)","TypeObjF008":"Quilt top with unfinished edge","OverallWidthF12a":"55 1/2\"","OverallLengthF012b":"64 1/2\"","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","ContInscripF020":"Printed cigar labels","MethodInscripF021":["Printed in the fabric"],"NumBlockF026":"30","ArrangeBlockF028":"Straight","SpacingF029":["Side by side"],"FiberTypesF035":["Silk"],"ConstrucF038g":["Embroidery"],"FabFiberTypesF040":["Cotton"],"ColorBackingF040b":["White"],"NumPiecesF042":"30","ConstrucBindF046":["Unfinished/raw edge"],"MatUsedF048":"No filling","ExhibitListF067a":"Michigan Quilts: A Celebration of 150 Years of Textile Tradition, East Lansing, MI, September 13, 1987-January 30, 1988, Michigan State University Museum","RelItemsF088a":"American Quilts, Quilting, and Patchwork by Adelaide Hechtlinger, Harrisburg, PA; Stackpole Books, 1974: 340-1. Howard, 01-28-2003:\r\n\r\nNancy Jane (Kinyon) Thompson & her husband Miles Henderson Thompson came to Camas Valley, Oregon on one of the migration trains in 1852. She died there in 1926 at the age of 99. Miles proceeded her in death at age 44 when his horse & wagon ran away with him somewhere between Roseburg, Or. and Camas Valley, Or. Her second husband James Jones also proceeded her in death. She was a midwife, riding her horse to deliver babies in the Camas Valley area. In the evenings she loved to sit in her rocking chair smoking her clay pipe. She would take coal out of the fireplace with a fire shovel & light her pipe; she smoked mostly \"Union Header\" and made quilts out of the empty bags. (I have one of the quilts). Welcome Combes, who I met in 1996, knew her well & took care of her in her final days. She told me that everyone knew & loved \"Grandma Jones\", that she had a habit of always swinging one leg, never sitting completely still. She told of Grandma Jones being outraged seeing two young girls riding astride and commented \"Those girls will surely come to no good!\" Nancy Jane & Miles H. Thompson are buried in the Martingale private cemetery in Camas Valley on property belonging to Welcome Combes & her husband. They were elderly in 1996 so I do not know if they are still alive & if not who now owns the cemetery.","TypeObjF008":"Other","TypeObjOtherF008a":"Comforter","OverallWidthF12a":"60\"","OverallLengthF012b":"83\"","SizeBlockF027":"4 1/2\" by 10\"","AltNameF011":"Rectangles","LayFormatF024":"Block pattern","SpacingF029":["Side by side"],"ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","PredomColorsF014":["Pink"],"OverallColorF14b":["Light or pastel colors"],"DamageF016":["Disintegration of fabric","Fading","Fold marks or creases","Open seams","Stains","Tears or holes","Other"],"OtherDamageF016a":"Rust","OverCondF015":"Poor/very worn","RepairHistF018":"Patches on back.","FamDateF023c":"c.1880","TypeInscripF019":["Other"],"OtherTypeInscripF019a":"Tobacco Pouches had printed labels.","ContInscripF020":"Union Leader Cut Plug\r\nPedro\r\nDixie Queen\r\nGold Shore","MethodInscripF021":["Printed in the fabric"],"FiberTypesF035":["Cotton"],"FabricTypeF036":["Other"],"FabPrintF037":["Solid/plain"],"UniqueF037b":"Tobacco pouches with intact grommets","ConstrucF038":["Hand Piecing"],"QuiltTechF049":["Tied or tufted"],"ThrTypeF049a":"Cotton","ThrColorF049b":"White","DesignF052d":"Quilt retied about 50 years ago.","ConstrucBindF046":["Back turned to front"],"WidthBindF047":"greater than one inch","BindWidthF047a":"varies from 1\" to 2\".","MatUsedF048":"Cotton","FabFiberTypesF040":["Cotton"],"ColorBackingF040b":["Gray"],"NumPiecesF042":"9","DescBackF043":["Hand sewn"],"SourceMatF063":["Other"],"OthSourceF063a":"Her tobacco pouches","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University, Michigan State University Museum, Quilt Alliance","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/40-38-157/2015.MA.SHH.012R.JPG"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/40-38-157/2015.MA.SHH.012Z.JPG"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Shively, Victoria J.","dateverified":"2016-03-29","dateverified_era":"CE","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","Pattern":"GRANDMA JONES TOBACCO POUCH QUILT","Maker":"[\"KINYON THOMPSON, NANCY JANE\"]","Date":"c.1880","legacy_kid":"6A-FD-193","project_id":"40","form_id":"38","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 03:33:25","updated_at":"2024-02-26 14:35:50"},"sort":["[\"KINYON THOMPSON, NANCY JANE\"]"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"Na5iWZEB8akQsUwerAGz","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"21-17-764","InstNameF003":["North Carolina Museum of History"],"InstProjNameF003a":"North Carolina Quilt Project","InstInvContrNumF004":"CM46; 1988.92.1","InstInvContrNumF004a":"CM046","IdentPersonF006":["Relative of quiltmaker"],"SourceOtherF006a":"Niece in-law","DateDataF006b":"12-17-1986; Chapel Hill, NC","RelnQuiltF007":["Quilt owner"],"IfQownerF007b":["Received as a gift"],"TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","OwnerNameF010":"Tobacco Leaf (she said)","AltNameF011":"Washington Sidewalk variation","BrackmanF011a":"2813A","OverallWidthF12a":"78\"","OverallLengthF012b":"81\"","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","ShapeCornersF013b":"Straight","PredomColorsF014":["Beige or Tan","Brown","Gray","Red"],"OverCondF015":"Good/moderate use","DateQuiltF023":"1876-1900","FamDateF023c":"1879","OtherExDateF023d":"1879","OtherDateF023e":"Roberson, Ruth","NumBlockF026":"25","SizeBlockF027":"9\" x 10 - 10.5\"","SpacingF029":["Separated by plain sashing"],"OtherSpaceF029a":"Brown print sashing","SashWidthF032":"5.25\"","NumBordersF033":"1","BordDescF034":"Same as sashing","FabPrintF037":["Dotted","Print","Solid/plain"],"FabFiberTypesF040":["Other"],"OtherFabF040a":"Rose, tan print on maroon","ColorBackingF040b":["Beige or Tan","Pink"],"WidthPiecesF042a":"23\"","DescBackF043":["Print"],"ConstrucBindF046":["Back turned to front","Hand sewn","Straight grain"],"WidthBindF047":"less than a half inch","BindWidthF047a":"3/8\"","MatUsedF048":"Cotton","QuiltTechF049":["Hand quilting"],"ThrColorF049b":"Brown","NumStitchedF050":"10","NumStitchF051":"10","KnotsF051b":"no","DesignF052a":["All-over-design"],"DesignF052d":"Parallel lines forming a triangle shape","FeaturesF053":"Documenter notes: I have heard this quilting pattern described as roof-top - as a very easy way to quilt - all straight lines and all quilting can be done from R to L","QuiltTopF054":"Lamb, Mrs. Mary Herring","QuiltedByF055":"Lamb, Mrs. Mary Herring","ProvCountyF057b":"Sampson County","ProvStateF057d":"North Carolina (NC)","ProvCountryF057f":["United States"],"AcquiredF058":"Gift","QuiltHistF059":"Quilt is now owned by the NC Museum of History. \r\nCollection of Michigan State University Museum acc.#2001:158.8","essay":""Cigar Ribbon," "Tobacco Flannel," "Crazy," and "Log Cabin" quilts of this era often share similar construction and design traits, including the use of embroidered silk fabrics set on a fabric foundation, often without batting or quilting. In this example a cotton foundation was used, seams were embellished with embroidery stitches, and no quilting or batting was used. The design used here is similar to a pieced "Log Cabin" or "Pineapple" block.
\r\n
\r\nDuring the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, novelty fabrics were produced to help promote the sale of tobacco. Cigarette silks and tobacco flannels, offered as premiums with the purchase of tobacco products, were intended as collectables and were printed with images of flowers, portraits of actresses, flags, baseball players, and more. The silk ribbons found in this quilt would have been wrapped around bundles of cigars and carry their brand names. Ribbons are most commonly yellow, but were also produced in other colors, including black, red, and blue. Women's magazines featured instructions for creating pillows or blocks with the ribbons.
