She began quilting almost 20 years ago and there’s nothing else she’d rather be doing. Barbara takes great joy in showing her quilts locally, regionally, and nationally. Her work has received numerous awards, including Best of Show, Best Miniature, and Best Amateur Machine Quilting. \r\n\r\nBarbara has been the Editor of The Quilting Quarterly, the Journal of The National Quilting Association for three years. She takes great pride in developing content that has broad appeal for NQA members and is always happy to have feedback from readers. Before accepting this position, Barbara was a Contributing Editor for American Quilter, the magazine of the American Quilter’s Society. She is a columnist writing about life lessons learned from quilting for The Country Register family of newspapers and her column is carried across the United States and Canada.\r\n\r\nWhen not working on quilt-related activities, Barbara has a consulting business wherein she and a partner guide nonprofit organizations in grant seeking and other fund development activities. Her long-term involvement in the nonprofit sector has led to a belief in giving back through volunteer service. Barbara has served on the Boards of Directors of Arizona Quilters Guild, The National Quilting Association, and The Association of Pacific West Quilters. She is the founder and was the first president of the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame. This nonprofit organization strives to celebrate the contributions of Arizonans to quiltmaking and educate the public about quiltmaking, its history, and artisans. Barbara was inducted in the Arizona Quilters Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2013. \r\n\r\nMany of her current quilts incorporate painted elements and vintage doilies. Barbara offers a wide variety of lectures and classes and has taught and lectured at national venues. Not\r\nall museums appreciate the art and craft of hand made quilts.\r\n\r\nAudrey Waite\r\n\r\n","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-3001/DSC_0040_925.JPG"],"Detail 1":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-3001/DSC_0041_926.JPG"],"Detail 2":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-3001/DSC_0042_927.JPG"],"Detail 3":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-3001/DSC_0043_928.JPG"],"Pattern":"EMBROIDERY NURSERY CRIB QUILT","Maker":"[\"WAITE, AUDREY\"]","Date":"1976-1999","legacy_kid":"67-EC-8C7","project_id":"38","form_id":"36","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 01:27:39","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:13:13"},"sort":["EMBROIDERY NURSERY CRIB QUILT"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"aq5lWZEB8akQsUweiW4G","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"38-36-4686","InstNameF003":["Arizona Quilt Documentation Project"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project; Arizona Quilter's Hall of Fame","InstInvContrNumF004":"1BP","DateDataF006b":"11-18-2013","locationF007f":"Gilbert Arizona","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"Finally...Those Maple Leaves","OverallWidthF12a":"80 inches","OverallLengthF012b":"80 inches","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","ShapeCornersF013b":"Straight","OverallColorF14b":["Multicolor"],"PredomColorsF014":["Cream","Gold"],"OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","OtherDamageF016a":"None","OtherRepairsF017a":"None","RepairHistF018":"None","DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","DateBegunF023a":"2000","DateFinishF023b":"2005","OthSourceF063a":"Local quilt stores.","SubjQuiltF025":"Maple Leaf Blocks","LayFormatF024":"Block pattern","AltNameF011":"Maple Leaf","OthTopSourceF064a":"Britt Toppenberg, \"Mountain Colorfest\" with changes","NumBlockF026":"36","SizeBlockF027":" 9.5 x 9.5 inches","MedallionF031":"No","BlockStyleF030a":["Squares"],"ArrangeBlockF028":"Straight","SpacingF029":["Side by side"],"OtherSpaceF029a":"None","NumBlockPatF030":"One","SashWidthF032":"None","NumBordersF033":"Three","BordDescF034":"On all sides; 2 inches, 4 inches, 6 inches. \r\nQuilted Apple in Phoenix.  I traveled with my own personal bookmarks to
\r\nget author's signatures since I was moving from AZ to VA via CA in
\r\n1979.  I met Jinny Beyer at a quilt show in Santa Clara, CA and while
\r\ngetting her signature I told her I was moving to her part of the country
\r\n- not sure if I would be living in MD or VA.  As it turns out we bought
\r\na house on her street.  Even before moving in I registered for the
\r\nContinental Quilting Congress in Arlington, VA.  Hazel Carter was in
\r\ncharge, and when she saw my registration and the address, she called
\r\nJinny to tell her a quilter was moving in on her street.  So as soon as
\r\nthe moving van left, Jinny was at my front door with her home made bread
\r\nand jam and asked if I would like to attend the Quilters Unlimited
\r\nmeeting in Vienna with her.  Duh...of course.  Her son became our
\r\nbabysitter for our first grade son and her daughter walked to first
\r\ngrade with our son.  Jinny and I roomed together at the host hotel in
\r\nArlington, Va while attending the Continental Quilting Congress.
\r\nJonathon Holstein and Gail Van der Hof were there with their children
\r\nand Jinny ran into them in the lobby.  I guess their plane was delayed
\r\nbut they had already checked out of the hotel so Jinny invited them to
\r\nour room to wait for a later departure. Jinny was teaching in her home
\r\nat the time so I signed up for her Medallion quilt class.  She required
\r\nyou to go through her first book Patchwork Patterns and do all the
\r\nexercises before you could enroll in the medallion quilt class.
\r\nI asked her to help me layer my embroidered baby quilt into the flimsy quilt
\r\nframe I bought from Sears.  She told me it wasn't a good quilt frame so
\r\nI invested in a cherry wood round hoop on a stand and used it from then
\r\non. While in the house she noticed an inlaid chessboard my husband had
\r\npurchased on an Air Force trip to Tripoli, Libya.  She said the design
\r\nin the chessboard would make a good medallion quilt and if I didn't make
\r\nit, she would.  Challenge on!  So that is why my quilt is titled "Tripoli".  It was just a top when photographed for her book.  My husband was transferred to Germany so I corresponded with Jinny while we were in Germany.  I remember I had to ask her to mail me some additional
\r\nVIP rust colored fabric to finish the top.  My husband called me the
\r\n"quilt top queen" because I made many tops (most for class samples while
\r\nteaching in Germany and Arizona) so I had never quilted Tripoli.  He
\r\nquizzed me in church one Sunday.....when are you going to finish that
\r\nmedallion quilt?  I replied, I'm not.  So he told me to get someone else
\r\nto do it, so I called Carol Meka in Scottsdale and asked if she would hand
\r\nquilt it for me if I sent her monthly checks.  We both worked at The Quilted
\r\nApple.  I also worked at The Quilt Patch in Fairfax, VA, taught at The
\r\nQuilters Store in Sedona, Pine Country Quilts in Flagstaff and The Quilt
\r\nCrossing in Prescott.  I also have a quilt in a book by
\r\nJoyce Schlotzhauer and contributed to pieces in books by Elly Sienkiewicz.

THIS QUILT'S FOR YOU\r\n\r\nNellie Mae Harber-Jones was my paternal grandmother. My only grandmother. I'm sure that\tshe and I bonded together soon after I was born. We were always very close. And I spent as much time with her as I could when I was growing up. She taught me how to sew a straight line on a treadle sewing machine. How to do embroidery and other skills that my mother had never learned because her mother died when she was three years old. They lived in the country and my grandfather never remarried. Mother did mend a \"mountain of clothes\" for her large family, so I guess I learned about mending from her, too.\r\n\r\nAnyway, our family slept under a mountain of \"grandma Jones\" quilts in cold midwestern winters when we were growing up. Grandma made these bed coverings out of pieces of discarded winter woolen clothing all from family members. I never stopped and truly admired her quilts while I was growing up and\tusing them. It was only years later when\r\nI became a quilter myself did I stop, remember a lot and be inspired by the memories of her handwork.\r\nShe used four inch squares (like I do) in making her quilts. Probably cut from cardboard. They were all pieced by grandma's hands. She used a double thread in piecing the squares and rows (just like I do.) She usually set her wool scraps in diagonal rows by color or pattern (just like I do, instinctively.) She used my uncle Ed's army uniform in one of her quilts. She used one of her daughter's discarded living room drapes on another quilt backing.\r\nMy aunt Lola was not married at that time and was a school teacher. She wore very nice wool suits and when she no longer wanted them it added some quality to grandma's fabric collection.\r\nGrandma really taught me about life and her attitude towards it. The value of hard work and not complaining. I learned about love and caring for family and friends.\r\nGrandma lost three of her sons tragically but she kept on going in her life. She never lost her sense of humor.\r\nOne day when I had two small children of my own, she said to me; \"I've lived a good life and I have no regrets. God blessed me with a wonderful life and family and for that I am so thankful.\r\nAnd grandma I am so thankful for the quilt memories and You.\r\n","ProvStateF057d":"Arizona (AZ)","ProvCountryF057f":["United States"],"ReasonsF060":["Commemorative"],"PresUseF062":["Other"],"IdentPersonF006":["Quilt owner","Quiltmaker"],"IfQmakerF007a":["Made entire quilt"],"IfQownerF007b":["Made the quilt"],"ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1476/Reid004-1.JPG"],"Detail 1":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1476/Reid004-2.JPG"],"Detail 2":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1476/Reid004-3.JPG"],"Detail 3":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1476/Reid004-5.JPG"],"Detail 4":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1476/Reid004-4.JPG"],"Pattern":"GRANDMA JONES THIS QUILTS FOR YOU","Maker":"[\"JONES-REID, DARLENE M.\"]","Date":"1976-1999","legacy_kid":"67-EC-1F5","project_id":"38","form_id":"36","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 01:08:24","updated_at":"2024-02-26 14:34:45"},"sort":["GRANDMA JONES THIS QUILTS FOR YOU"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"0a5lWZEB8akQsUwegGe-","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"38-36-2997","InstNameF003":["Arizona Quilt Documentation Project"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project; Arizona Quilter's Hall of Fame","InstInvContrNumF004":"GIL150014","DateDataF006b":"08-28-2015","locationF007f":"Gilbert, Arizona","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"Heart Wreath Medallion","OverallWidthF12a":" 30.5 inches","OverallLengthF012b":"30.5 inches","ShapeEdgeF013":"T-cutout","ShapeCornersF013b":"Straight","OverallColorF14b":["Multicolor"],"PredomColorsF014":["Red"],"OverCondF015":"Very good/almost new","DateQuiltF023":"1976-1999","DateBegunF023a":"1995","SourceMatF063":["Purchased new"],"SubjQuiltF025":"Heart Applique","LayFormatF024":"Medallion or framed center","AltNameF011":"Bouquet Heart","OthTopSourceF064a":"Mimi Dietrich","SizeBlockF027":" inches","MedallionF031":"Applique","OtherSpaceF029a":"3 frames","FiberTypesF035":["Cotton"],"FabricTypeF036":["Muslin"],"FabPrintF037":["Solid/plain"],"ConstrucF038":["Machine Piecing"],"ConstrucF038b":["Hand Applique"],"ConstrucF038d":["Dimensional applique","Folding","Gathering/ruching","Yo-yo","Other novelty technique"],"EmbellTechF038f":"Yes","ConstrucF038g":["Embroidery"],"EmbMatF039":["Other attachments"],"MatUsedF044":["Cotton"],"FabStrucF045":["Plain weave"],"ConstrucBindF046":["Separate binding applied","Front turned to back","Straight grain","Hand sewn","Machine sewn"],"MatUsedF048":"Cotton or polyester blend","BattLoftF048a":"Thin (Less than 3/16?)","QuiltedByF055":"Heikkila, lori","QuiltTechF049":["Hand quilting"],"ThrTypeF049a":"Cotton","ThrColorF049b":"Ecru","NumStitchedF050":"8","NumStitchF051":"9","DesignF052a":["Grid diamond"],"DesignF052b":["Feathering"],"FabFiberTypesF040":["Cotton"],"ColorBackingF040b":["White"],"NumPiecesF042":"1","DescBackF043":["Same fabric used throughout"],"FeaturesF053":"Hand Dyed Fabric Class","OwnershipF082":"Private","OwnerNameF082a":"Audrey Waite","OwnerStateF086":"Arizona (AZ)","OwnerCountryF086b":["United States"],"SourceInfoF088b":"Audrey Waite","DateObtainedF088c":"1992-1995","RelItemsF088a":"Adrienne Buffington came to Sedona to teach a group of us to hand dye fabric in a plastic baggie.  We all dyed different colors and then shared the fabric.  I made this wall hanging using a paater from "Baltimore Bouquets" book by Mimi Dietrich, 1992, Published by that Patchwork Place

She was a beautiful young woman. She was my maternal grandmother. She came from a prosperous hard working Methodist family. She fell in love with John Patrick Slattery, my maternal grandfather who lived on a nearby farm. He came from a hardworking, prosperous Catholic family.\r\n\r\nI don't think her family wanted Belle to marry John, but when she was twenty and he was twenty seven they were married. I don't know how the whole Catholic/Methodist thing worked out for them. (I never heard that family story.)\r\nI know from family stories that Poppy was the only one who went to his catholic church. I know her family was very active in the nearby methodist church and I guess she would have been too.\r\n\r\nWhen I see her picture on this quilt, which was taken for her wedding, she seems to be saying to me (and the world) \"But I Love Him.\"\r\nI can see why she would say that. Poppy was a very sweet, kind, lovable person. We all loved him. They were married in January 1899.\r\n\r\nTheir first two children, Donald and Gladys died at 18 and 9 months of common childhood diseases which are easily curable/preventable today.\r\nAnd then she gave birth to Ruth, Leo, Grace, Mildred, Pauline and Helen.....Who all lived to adulthood and lived good long lives. At age 37 Belle, when her youngest was a year old, became sick with, \"pneumonia\" (that's what the family story is) and died on December 20, 1916. Her funeral was the day before Christmas.\r\nI wonder though if having 8 children in 17 years had some bearing on her health. And I also wonder that if she did have pneumonia, like Donald and Gladys and their illnesses there were no \"wonder drugs\" then, 1916. Today pneumonia is routinely treated with antibiotics.\r\nAnyway, I wish that Belle could have lived on longer, and she could have spent some time as my grandma.\r\nSadly she didn't and so I made this story quilt to honor her.\r\n","ProvStateF057d":"Arizona (AZ)","ProvCountryF057f":["United States"],"ReasonsF060":["Other"],"OtherQDesignF061a":"Create a family story quilt.","IdentPersonF006":["Quiltmaker"],"IfQmakerF007a":["Made entire quilt"],"IfQownerF007b":["Made the quilt"],"PartDesF007c":["Designed the pattern"],"ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1473/Reid001-1.JPG"],"Detail 1":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1473/Reid001-2.JPG"],"Detail 2":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1473/Reid001-3.JPG"],"Detail 3":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1473/Reid001-4.JPG"],"Detail 4":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-1473/Reid001-5.JPG"],"Pattern":"LAURA BELLE I NEVER KNEW YE","Maker":"[\"REID, DARLENE M.\"]","Date":"1976-1999","legacy_kid":"67-EC-1F0","project_id":"38","form_id":"36","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 01:08:20","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:13:09"},"sort":["LAURA BELLE I NEVER KNEW YE"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"K65lWZEB8akQsUweeWHc","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"38-36-1294","InstNameF003":["Arizona Quilt Documentation Project"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project; Arizona Quilter's Hall of Fame","InstInvContrNumF004":"6DP","DateDataF006b":"11-06-2013","locationF007f":"Gilbert Arizona","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"Legacy Redwork","OverallWidthF12a":"60.5 inches","OverallLengthF012b":"65.5 inches","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","ShapeCornersF013b":"Straight","OverallColorF14b":["Two color"],"PredomColorsF014":["Cream","Red"],"QuiltSpecColorF014a":["Turkey Red"],"OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","TypeInscripF019":["Date"],"ContInscripF020":"Label on lower left back of quilt","DateInscripF020a":"c. 2003","DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","DateBegunF023a":"c. 1915","DateFinishF023b":"c. 2003","OthSourceF063a":"Local quilt store","LayFormatF024":"Block pattern","AltNameF011":"Redwork","NumBlockF026":"25","SizeBlockF027":"10 x 9 inches","ArrangeBlockF028":"Straight","SashWidthF032":"plain sashing","NumBordersF033":"1","BordDescF034":"One border: 3.75 inches, plain, same as sashing, border on all sides,","FiberTypesF035":["Cotton"],"FabPrintF037":["Solid/plain"],"ConstrucF038":["Machine Piecing"],"UniqueF038h":"10 different hand embroidered redwork","EmbellTechF038f":"Yes","ConstrucF038g":["Embroidery"],"MatUsedF044":["Cotton"],"FabStrucF045":["Plain weave"],"ConstrucBindF046":["Hand sewn","Machine sewn"],"WidthBindF047":"less than a half inch","MatUsedF048":"Cotton","UniqueBattF048b":"Warm and Natural","BattLoftF048a":"Thin (Less than 3/16?)","QuiltedByF055":"Pitchford, Diane","QuiltTechF049":["Hand quilting"],"ThrTypeF049a":"Mettler Cotton","ThrColorF049b":"Red #601 and Ecru","NumStitchedF050":"13","WidthF051a":".75 inches","DesignF052a":["Grid/crosshatch"],"DesignF052b":["Cables"],"DesignF052c":["Grid/crosshatch"],"DesignF052d":"Cable quilting in sashing/borders","FabFiberTypesF040":["Cotton"],"ColorBackingF040b":["Beige or Tan","Red"],"NumPiecesF042":"3","WidthPiecesF042a":"9x65.5; 42x65.5; 9.5x65.5 inches","DescBackF043":["Same fabric used throughout"],"FeaturesF053":"Object not commercially manufactured; Arizona Quilters Guild 2000 3rd Place and examplary hand quilting","OwnershipF082":"Private","OwnerNameF082a":"Diane Olson Pitchford","OwnerCityF084":"Gilbert","OwnerCountyF085":"AZ","OwnerStateF086":"Arizona (AZ)","OwnerCountryF086b":["United States"],"OwnerZipF087":"85233","ProvenanceF058a":"Inherited blocks made by maternal grandmother in 1987. Poppy never spoke of them at all.\r\n\r\nAnd then I grew up, got married and had children of my own. And lost a child of my own and I still remembered Poppy's children.\r\n\r\nMy children grew older and I realized one of my dreams and became a nurse. Still remembering those children as well as my own.\r\nThen I became a quilter and felt a need to begin creating family story quilts. To date I have made four story quilts and Donald and Gladys is one of the stories.\r\n\r\nAt the turn of these twentieth century, the death of children due to the illnesses childhood was a heartbreaking and all too common occurrence. My grandparents, Belle and John Slattery stood helplessly by as illness took their first two children.\r\n\r\nTheir first child, Donald, was a healthy little boy when he became ill with typhoid fever. There were no \"miracle drugs\" in 1901 when he died.\r\nToday this illness is prevented by the chlorination of drinking water. The same month that they buried Donald, Belle became pregnant with their second child, Gladys.\r\nOnce again, Gladys was a happy and healthy 9 month old when illness struck again. Her illness was spinal meningitis. Once again parents and doctor stood by helplessly in 1903. Today, this illness is treated with antibiotics.\r\n\r\nBelle and John did have 6 more children who survived childhood illness and lived long lives.\r\n\r\nLook at their sweet little faces, just I did. A dozen years later she became more serious about her quiltmaking and was introduced to machine piecing. Her piecing skills improved as she moved from traditional patterns to the more complicated tile floor patterns she is working with today. She began teaching machine piecing classes in 1984 and thoroughly enjoys giving students the technical skills they need to turn their vision into quilts. \r\nI knew in first grade that I wanted to be a teacher. By ninth grade I knew the subject I would teach would be math. Though sewing was something that I had always done, quiltmaker was not on my list of goals. \r\n\r\nI became a junior high school math teacher. Though not on my original list, quiltmaking grew slowly and steadily to a place of increasing importance in my life. I have always loved jigsaw puzzles and the fitting together of small bits of fabric seems to be an extension of that love. \r\n\r\nCombining my love of piecing and my love of teaching was a natural progression. I enjoy helping students build a solid foundation in machine piecing. Though not every quilt requires precision piecing, a quilter who hasn't learned the basics of piecing has fewer options for any given project. Once they possess the skills to do precision piecing, a quilter has the choice to use them, or branch out from them. \r\n\r\nI began writing this because I was asked for an Artist's Statement. But I see myself as a teacher and a quiltmaker, not an artist. That may be a title I eventually embrace, but for now I am quite happy being a quiltmaker and sharing my enthusiasm and skills with as many quilters as possible. I've tried just about every technique but prefer hand applique. In 1995 Dee Lynn and I created a business called Quilt Camp in the Pines held at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff every July, from 1995-2010 when we sold the business to Ginny Goodbar. We also ran Quilting in the Desert in Phoenix every January from 2004 to 2010. So after 1995 I didn't have much time to make quilts but continue to make small items for pleasure and charity. My primary interest is in quilt history and collecting antique quilts. I have been collecting antique quilts since 1976 when we lived in AL. I initially purchased everything, but then decided I should focus on a pattern, style or era. So I tried to collect signed and/or dated quilts because I figured they were more valuable. I frequently get asked how many I have so finally took inventory and found I had over 70 which is not a tremendous amount in the collecting arena, but it's a lot to document and try to store properly. While living in VA I was able to serve as a volunteer once a week at the Smithsonian's Museum of American History in the Textiles Division. That was a wonderful experience. As a new volunteer they have you filing and then move on to more\r\nmeaningful chores such as sewing crepelene onto fragile areas of quilts going on exhibit.\r\n\r\nI recently loaned a Double Irish Chain quilt to the National\r\nQuilt Museum in Paducah, KY for a quilt exhibit of that particular pattern.\r\n\r\nPreviously I loaned an antique Amish made quilt to the Museum of\r\nNorthern Arizona in Flagstaff but pulled it when I discovered they had\r\nno security to keep visitors from touching quilts or stealing them. Not\r\nall museums appreciate the art and craft of hand made quilts.\r\n\r\nAudrey Waite\r\n\r\n","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-2996/DSC_0018_903.JPG"],"Detail 1":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-2996/DSC_0016_901.JPG"],"Detail 2":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-2996/DSC_0015_900.JPG"],"Pattern":"MEMORIES OF KEUKENHOF","Maker":"[\"WAITE, AUDREY\"]","Date":"1976-1999","legacy_kid":"67-EC-8C2","project_id":"38","form_id":"36","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 01:27:35","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:13:13"},"sort":["MEMORIES OF KEUKENHOF"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"4K5lWZEB8akQsUweeWHc","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"38-36-1475","InstNameF003":["Arizona Quilt Documentation Project"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project; Arizona Quilter's Hall of Fame","InstInvContrNumF004":"04182014-3Reid","DateDataF006b":"04-18-2014","locationF007f":"Gilbert Arizona","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"Mother, Mae & Belle","OverallWidthF12a":"42 inches","OverallLengthF012b":"34 inches","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","ShapeCornersF013b":"Straight","OverallColorF14b":["Multicolor","Dark colors"],"PredomColorsF014":["Black","Blue or Navy","Brown"],"OverCondF015":"Good/moderate use","TypeInscripF019":["Date","Multiple Names","Single"],"OtherTypeInscripF019a":"Top: Date; Multiple Names. At that time I believed that I was the only quilter in my family. Now, I know better because in the summer of 1992 I visited my Aunt Helen and as she was showing me her home, I noticed a beautiful piece of Victorian needlework handing in her dining room. \"That's a crazy quilt\" I said. \"Yes\" she replied and it was made by your great grandmother, Elizabeth Somerset-Dolby, your grandmother, Laura Belle Dolby-Slattery and Mae Dolby, your great aunt. Aunt Helen said \"See, they each signed their name to the squares they has made.\" I stepped a little closer to take it all in and I completely fell in love with the crazy quilt and these three quilting foremothers I had never known.\r\nI wasn’t the only quilter in the family! Hurray! For me and Hurray! for them.\r\n\r\nI never knew these lovely ladies. They died long before I was born but in creating my own version of their piece I felt that I had the privilege of getting to know each one a new way.\r\nThe first square I worked on was Great grandmother Elizabeth's.\r\nShe used only solid colors of brown, tan, gold and gray. She used only the Herringbone stitch in off-white and gold in her square. She seemed to me to be a plain, \"no nonsense\" type of person. She\r\nsigned her name \"Mother\" in gold floss on her square.\r\nNext came my grandmother's square.\tIt was a complete opposite of her mother's.\tIt was made up of smaller pieces of fabric in flowered, stripes and animal fabrics. She used a different embroidery stitch on every seam line she covered. She also used a stitch I call the \"He loves me-He loves me not stitch.\" It was a five petaled daisy-like flower done up using the satin stitch. She put them in various places\r\n in her square. The date, Sept.10, 1898 was in one corner. She signed her name \"Belle\" in pink floss. She seemed to be saying to me, \"See, I am nothing at all like my mother.\"\r\nAnd lastly, Mae made her patch. The fabrics she chose were more geometric and brighter. She made one daisy-like flower (to please her sister?) She signed her name on an apricot colored patch as \"Mae D.\" She seemed to be saying to me and to the world, \"I am an individual in my own right. Not\r\nall museums appreciate the art and craft of hand made quilts.\r\n\r\nAudrey Waite\r\n\r\n","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-2995/DSC_0010_895.JPG"],"Detail 1":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-2995/DSC_0009_894.JPG"],"Detail 2":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-2995/DSC_0008_893.JPG"],"Detail 3":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-2995/DSC_0007_892.JPG"],"Pattern":"TRIPOLI","Maker":"[\"WAITE, AUDREY\"]","Date":"1976-1999","legacy_kid":"67-EC-8C1","project_id":"38","form_id":"36","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 01:27:34","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:13:13"},"sort":["TRIPOLI"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"r65lWZEB8akQsUweh2zz","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"38-36-4243","InstNameF003":["Arizona Quilt Documentation Project"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project; Arizona Quilter's Hall of Fame","InstInvContrNumF004":"TUC160034","DateDataF006b":"04-09-2016","locationF007f":"Tucson, Arizona","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"Truro Mosaic II","OverallWidthF12a":"88 inches","OverallLengthF012b":"88 inches","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","ShapeCornersF013b":"Straight","OverallColorF14b":["Multicolor"],"PredomColorsF014":["Beige or Tan","Blue"],"QuiltSpecColorF014a":["Claret or Wine"],"OtherColorF014c":"navy, yellow, green, brown, rust","OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","TypeInscripF019":["Date","Message","Single"],"ContInscripF020":"1999-2000 Jean Biddick Truro Mosaic II Berkeley Heights, NJ","DateInscripF020a":"19990-2000","MethodInscripF021":["Ink"],"LocInscripF022":["on back"],"OtherLocInscripF022a":"back lower right. hand written","DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","DateBegunF023a":"c. 1999","DateFinishF023b":"c.2000","FamDateF023c":"c. 2000","SourceMatF063":["Purchased new"],"SubjQuiltF025":"Cosmati (Mosaic Tile)","LayFormatF024":"Other","AltNameF011":"Cosmati - in Cornwall England","OwnerNameF010":"Mosaid","TopSourceF064":["Original to maker"],"OthTopSourceF064a":"Truro Mosaic","CommSourceF064b":"Jean Biddick Book (Mosaic Quilts)","BlockStyleF030a":["Diamonds","Squares","Triangles"],"NumBordersF033":"1","BordDescF034":"One border on all sides, plain, fabric same as quilt","FiberTypesF035":["Cotton"],"FabPrintF037":["Batiks (for contemporary quilts)","Hand-dyed"],"ConstrucF038":["Machine Piecing"],"MatUsedF044":["Cotton"],"FabStrucF045":["Plain weave"],"ConstrucBindF046":["Separate binding applied","Bias grain","Home cut","Hand sewn","Machine sewn"],"WidthBindF047":"less than a half inch","MatUsedF048":"Cotton or polyester blend","UniqueBattF048b":"Hobbs 80/20","BattLoftF048a":"Thin (Less than 3/16?)","QuiltedByF055":"Biddick, Jean","QuiltTechF049":["Hand quilting"],"ThrTypeF049a":"Pearl Cotton","ThrColorF049b":"Varigated, hand-dyed","NumStitchedF050":"8","NumStitchF051":"9","WidthF051a":"varies","KnotsF051b":"no","DesignF052a":["Outline"],"DesignF052d":"Quilting overall pattern: marble veining. A dozen years later she became more serious about her quiltmaking and was introduced to machine piecing. Her piecing skills improved as she moved from traditional patterns to the more complicated tile floor patterns she is working with today. She began teaching machine piecing classes in 1984 and thoroughly enjoys giving students the technical skills they need to turn their vision into quilts.\r\nI knew in first grade that I wanted to be a teacher. By ninth grade I knew the subject I would teach would be math. Though sewing was something that I had always done, quiltmaker was not on my list of goals.\r\n\r\nI became a junior high school math teacher. Though not on my original list, quiltmaking grew slowly and steadily to a place of increasing importance in my life. I have always loved jigsaw puzzles and the fitting together of small bits of fabric seems to be an extension of that love.\r\n\r\nCombining my love of piecing and my love of teaching was a natural progression. I enjoy helping students build a solid foundation in machine piecing. Though not every quilt requires precision piecing, a quilter who hasn't learned the basics of piecing has fewer options for any given project. Once they possess the skills to do precision piecing, a quilter has the choice to use them, or branch out from them.\r\n\r\nI began writing this because I was asked for an Artist's Statement. But I see myself as a teacher and a quiltmaker, not an artist. That may be a title I eventually embrace, but for now I am quite happy being a quiltmaker and sharing my enthusiasm and skills with as many quilters as possible.\r\n","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-4243/TUC160034.JBiddick.1.JPG"],"Detail 1":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-4243/TUC160034.JBiddick.2.JPG"],"Detail 2":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-4243/TUC160034.JBiddick.3.JPG"],"Detail 3":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-4243/TUC160034.JBiddick.4.JPG"],"Detail 4":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/38-36-4243/TUC160034.JBiddick.5.JPG"],"Pattern":"TRURO MOSAIC II","Maker":"[\"BIDDICK, JEAN\"]","Date":"2000-2025","legacy_kid":"67-EC-DB7","project_id":"38","form_id":"36","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 01:50:09","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:13:18"},"sort":["TRURO MOSAIC II"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"fK5lWZEB8akQsUweiW4G","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"38-36-4704","InstNameF003":["Arizona Quilt Documentation Project"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project; Arizona Quilter's Hall of Fame","InstInvContrNumF004":"2BP","DateDataF006b":"11-18-2013","locationF007f":"Gilbert Arizona","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"Vernal Equinox","OverallWidthF12a":" 80 inches","OverallLengthF012b":" 80 inches","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","ShapeCornersF013b":"Straight","OverallColorF14b":["Multicolor"],"PredomColorsF014":["Cream","Gold"],"OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","OtherDamageF016a":"None","DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","DateBegunF023a":"2000","DateFinishF023b":"2005","SourceMatF063":["Purchased new"],"OthSourceF063a":"Local quilt store","SubjQuiltF025":"Maple Leaf","LayFormatF024":"Block pattern","AltNameF011":"Mountain Colorfest","TopSourceF064":["Commercial/Published source: Pattern"],"OthTopSourceF064a":"Britt Toppenberg","NumBlockF026":"36","SizeBlockF027":" 9.5 inches x 9.5 inches","BlockStyleF030a":["Squares"],"ArrangeBlockF028":"Straight","SpacingF029":["Side by side"],"OtherSpaceF029a":"None","NumBlockPatF030":"One","BordDescF034":"Three borders on all sides. I'm SO lucky that she said yes. We truly designed and executed the quilt together, meeting in person and sending sketches and photos back and forth via e-mail. Overall, it took 18 months to complete with some work on the piece almost every day. Each of the roses was painted off the surface of the quilt and turned into applique.
