Foundations include, red knit, coarsely woven indigo cotton, navy and black woven cotton check, navy cotton twill and black cotton twill. Most blocks use multiple fabrics held together by the appliqué stitches. There is some brown, residue, like dried glue on some spots on the foundations. The backgrounds are blue dyed broadcloth. Four tea leaf designs are appliquéd on each block. The edges are raw and are tacked by multiple strands of white thread couched with black. The couching is also used to connect the motifs in the center. The corners of the blocks are raw edge, appliquéd triangles with a curved, heart like, edge, also tacked with white thread that has been couched. Fabrics include floral cotton twill, blue and white woven check, light blue polyester knit. The blocks are bound with dirty white bias binding, mitered in the corners. The blocks are whip stitched together. There are threads and bits of fabric left from removing the border. Blocks are built from a center X or +, then triangles are added 3 times around to build the square. The blocks are tacked to the foundation with white cotton binding strips, creating the Economy block. Four blocks have embroidered centers with appliquéd shapes to complete the block. All block are appliquéd with black thread and back stitches or appliqué stitches. Each block is bound with coarsely woven grayed-white cotton, corners are butted. The blocks are whip stitched together. The piece is sewn into a giant pillowcase with indigo dyed cotton. Fabrics include printed cotton twills and knits.\r\n\r\nCondition is good. Some loose threads and lint should be removed before display. Fabrics include floral printed cotton twill. Each block is bound with soiled white, cotton bias with mitered corners. The blocks are whip stitched together. This quilt is very worn with substantial damage including worn edges and large holes. Some of the foundations are pieced, making me think they were cut from a garment or other finished article. Some of the foundations have multiple pieces that are only held together by the stitching on the front. \r\n\r\nOn top of the foundation a piece of cotton broadcloth that is about 1 1/2\" larger is centered. These alternate red with navy or black. The appliqués are stitched on top of the red, blue or black broadcloth. Each block consists of four motifs connected by stitching. The motifs include tea leaves, hearts and stars. The motifs are raw edged and are tacked with multiple strands of thread laid side by side, and couched with a contrasting color. The combinations include white, green, blue, turquoise threads couched in black; and blue threads couched in cream thread. The motifs are connected by just the couched threads. After the block is finished, the broadcloth is turned to the back of the block, and the blocks are hand stitched together. There is no border. \r\n\r\nFabric include solids, florals, checks and prints. They look like scraps from clothing of home furnishings.There are some stray threads throughout the top that should be removed before display, they look like they were there from some tags that have since been removed. The center is an uneven nine patch on point; triangles are added to four sides, three times, to build the square. Some of the pieces are also folded to create square shapes. Four squares are back stitched together with cotton binding strips (coarsely woven indigo, coarsely woven black, dirty white, blue print and blue solid), horizontal and vertical, creating the Economy block. One block has a different motif than the others. It has appliquéd tea leaves with triangles in the corners that have a scalloped edge on the long side. The scalloped edge is tacked down with multiple strands of cream thread laid side by side and couched with black thread. In the corners of the triangles are reverse appliquéd tea leaves tacked down with multiple strands of cream threads laid side by side and couched with black thread. The blocks are bound with a loosely woven, cream colored bias strip and the corners are mitered. The blocks are whip stitched together. \r\n\r\nThis pattern resembles the American quilt pattern, Economy. However it is made different. American quilters would piece this together. This quilt is made with a combination of foundation, fabric folding and appliqué. \r\n\r\nFabrics include cotton, silk, wovens, and printed cotton twills. Condition is good. Some loose threads and lint should be removed before display. The appliqué motifs are different colors and include prints; mostly cotton with some cotton twills and a bit of silk. Most motifs have the edges turned under and are tacked with a running or appliqué stitch in a contrasting thread. Some of the turned under edges have come undone. Some of the motifs have come undone and expose some gold colored paper, it's possible they were pattern pieces. There are a few embroidery stitches used on the motifs. The blocks are hand pieced together. \r\n\r\nNo borders and the raw edges are fraying. They should be trimmed before display. There are other small holes throughout the quilt. There is lint throughout that should be removed before display. Each block has an embroidered aster in the center that is bound in white cotton bias. Four pieces of fabric are used for the backgrounds. The backgrounds included cream and pale pink loosely woven cotton; terra cotta, royal and cadet blue broadcloth, and coarsely woven indigo blues. Binding strips are appliquéd on top of where the backgrounds meet. The corners have appliquéd triangles with scalloped raw edges. The edges are tacked down with a double row of decorative embroidery stitches in two colors. Each corner has a half aster embroidered on it. On the top and bottom are 6, 5\" square blocks. They are foundation pieced with dark indigo, coarsely woven cotton backgrounds. The raw edges are reverse appliquéd with a double row of embroidery stitches in two colors on the motifs. The blocks alternate, one block having a center four point star shape, surrounded by four comma shapes, then long shapes with scalloped edges on each outside edge. The other block has a spiral center with corner, fleur-de-lis motifs. One block is embroidered flowers on a black twill cotton background. The blocks and borders are pieced together and the borders are pieced to the center block. Many fabrics have worn completely away. There is a lot of lint on the border. The irregular shapes and fading patterns of the fabrics used in the foundations make me think these were recycled. Most of the motifs on the front of the quilt consist of four tea leaves or hearts in the center with triangles in the corners. The long sides of the triangles are scalloped. All motifs are raw edge and tacked to the foundation using multiple strands of thread laid side by side or a ribbon about 3/16\" wide couched with black thread. One block has a star with four tea leaves reverse appliquéd in its center. Another block has four sets of four tea leaves and no scalloped triangles in the corners. All of the blocks were finished with cream colored bias binding, applied to the front, mitered at the corners and stitched to the back of the blocks with a running stitch. Most of the blocks use a loosely woven binding, but one block uses a tightly woven white bias binding. The blocks are stitched together with a whip stitch from the back of the quilt. Fabrics include silk, knits, wovens, corduroy, plaids, solids, checks and florals. Condition is good. There are a few loose threads and small holes. Layered on foundations. Foundations contain multiple pieces of fabric held together by the top stitching on the front. There is a glue-like residue on the back of the quilt. \r\n\r\nThe edges of the motifs are turned under and appliquéd down with white machine straight stitch. Machine top stitching was also used to add details to some of the motifs. The blocks were carefully planned to make the corners match the adjacent blocks and create the secondary design. The blocks are machine pieced together. The borders are mitered by folding and appliquéing them instead of seaming them. The excess fabric is not cut away. This quilt is well done. There is a little fading and some bits of stitching have not caught all the motif. There are a few stray threads that appear to have held some tags or were used to attach this to a piece of furniture.
