All hand-sewn, hand-pieced. In lieu of fancy embroidery stitches, I used simple beading techniques to create decorative joinery. Beading was done on copper or stainless steel wire. Beads include glass, plastic & semi-precious stones (jade, fresh-water pearls, garnets, primarily). The beaded wire is pierced through the fabric & secured under the percale stabilizer. Then the beaded wire is stitched to both sides of fabric (hopefully unobtrusively).","QuiltTopF054":"Sorrell, Mary Evelynn","LocMadeF057a":"Round Top","ProvStateF057d":"Texas","description":"This quilt, called Homage to Bling, is duo-purpose. That is it can serve as a ‘mere’decorative piece but it can also serve the function as a place to hang jewelry. The appliqué at the top of the quilt is actually a pocket for stud earrings or anything else that is small. The crescent moon, the dancing figure, and a decorative hook can hold necklaces. Pins can be pinned to the patches or hung from the beaded joinery as the copper wire is fairly strong. I am a pragmatist and rebelled against making something that would not have a useful function as well as being decorative. It was great fun, although often nerve-wracking, to try to find solutions to all the problems that arose with my decision to do beading for joinery instead of embroidery. I enjoyed so much finding beads that would be compatible with the two patches being joined and was glad I had such a large assortment of beading available. Last year I just had too much on my plate, but when I got the announcement this year, I just had to try to get some pieces put together. I love crazy quilting. As a child I tried to put the pieces together into a crazy quilt but it really did not work out too well as I did not realize that there was probably a stabilizer (such as a piece of muslin) beneath the scraps to help make the craziness have a little more order. I learned about that about 20 years ago and have delved into types of crazy piecing since then. As I flew across the country in April I could see all kinds of ideas for pieces – but I was only able to finish four. There are lots more ideas in my head though. Gardening is one of my hobbies. All the beautiful flowers such as Columbine, Dephinium, Oriental Poppies, Phlox, Daisies, Bleeding Heart, Iris and Lilies – all the flowers that come from bulbs, Pinks, Lobelia, Love-in-the-Mist, Coreopsis, and Lavender were inspiring. The shapes and colors are so diverse and just plain wonderful. I usually work quite large, so it is a great challenge for me to make a small quilt. Since one can donate more than one quilt to the Alliance, I decided to create four quilts that could be hung separately or together. I see them as a four-some, but they don’t have to be that way. If they are hung as conceived the viewer should see a pond in the middle with a little grass around it and then a pathway around the whole pond and garden with stepping stone in each quadrant so one can get to the pond. Each part of the garden has a featured color: red, purple, pink and blue. The silk flowers became part of the quilt because I could not find a small red flowered print that pleased me. But then I liked the flowers appliquéd on so I continued that theme throughout the rest of the quilt. Embroidery was my first method of artistic communication. I enjoy the fact that crazy quilts have embroidery on them. The stitching enriches the surface. Creating this was a totally enjoyable experience. Hopefully it will be a totally enjoyable viewing experience.","function":"Image - medium display (250-500 pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","verify":"yes","Pattern":"CRAZY QUILT GARDEN - RED","Maker":"[\"HAEGER, MAUDE\"]","legacy_kid":"1-6-E1","project_id":"52","form_id":"152","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-05-27 13:24:38","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:16:52"},"sort":["[\"HAEGER, MAUDE\"]"]}]}}
