On the right of the block is a tree with a white trunk with pink foliage resting on a dark blue floor. On the bottom left corner of the block is a blue and white fan design. This quilt dates slightly later than the other two and is a fine example of needlework and Mrs. Price's sewing ability. In addition to the donation of the quilt, Mrs. Barnes has shared images of Mrs. Price at the time she made the quilt. Mrs. Price was married to a dry goods store owner in Colorado City where they lived a comfortable life. Louise was born in Louisiana and died in Cherokee County Texas. Her parents died in Cherokee County and her siblings seem to have died in Texas as well, so it is probable that Louisa came to Texas with her parents. The grid pattern is made of single patches of various fabrics colored white, pink, yellow, red, blue, light blue, green, light green, and dark green. In the middle of the rectangle are four diamonds that are embellished with a single heart patch in the middle that is made up of irregular patches of fabric and bordered with red lace. Each of the embellished hearts are embellished with a smaller red heart. They were great-granddaughters of John Wesley DeVilbiss who preached the first Protestant sermon in San Antonio in 1843 and began the Methodist Church there. Louetta paid $3 for someone in Crane, Texas to make the quilt. Leta was the oldest child in the family and Louetta the youngest. Leta taught school in “old” Mexico and when she came home on the train to visit in the summer she brought a toy for Louetta as well as her savings. Thus she earned from her much-younger sister the nickname “Toy.” She continued this toy gifting tradition with Louetta’s son, Darrell Vines and was his “Aunt Toy,” as well as his grandmother figure. Appears to be 3 spiral patterns similar to Brackman 2400: Nautilus, pg. 326. All of these spiral designs connect to each other.
