\r\n
\r\nI am fascinated by the formal elements of design- the interaction of shape and line, the contrast between light and dark values, the subtle variations in color, and the ways in which colors affect each other.
\r\n
\r\nMuch of my design training was in architecture school.  Architecture has been a great influence on my work.  Other influences include 20th century abstract painting and 19th century scrap quilts.
\r\n
\r\nI began making quilts in 1983, shortly after moving to Arizona.  I usually work in series, exploring a design idea in a group of quilts over a period of two to five years.  As I work on each quilt new possibilities for other quilts employing the same block, color family, or piecing strategy present themselves.
\r\n
\r\nIn the early 1990's, dissatisfied with the limits of commercially produced fabrics, i started dyeing some of the fabrics I used in my quilts, mixing them with purchased fabrics.  A few years later I took screen printing classes form Clare Verstegen at Arizona State University, adding that technique to my repertoire.  More recently I have started creating my own wax resist fabrics.  I now rely almost exclusively on my own dyed and printed fabrics.  I thoroughly enjoy all these surface design processes, but my favorite part of quilt making remains the design and construction of the pieced quilt top.
\r\n
\r\nIn making quilts, I am always striving to create complex images which call the viewer back again and again for another look.","QuiltTopF054":"Garrison, Ruth","GenderF098":["Female"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Lynn Miller","dateverified":"2017-03-01","dateverified_era":"CE","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project","CopyRestF080c":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project","DistribRestF080d":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project","DisplayResF080e":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project","LicenseF080f":"Arizona Quilt Documentation Project","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University and Michigan State University Museum","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","QuiltHistF059":"Who is the Phoenix Airport Museum:\r\nThe mission of the Phoenix Airport Museum is to enhance the Airport visitor's experience by creating a memorable environment that promotes Arizona’s unique artistic and cultural heritage through an Art Collection, Exhibition Program and the Aviation History Collection.\r\nhttps://skyharbor.com/Museum/FAQs \r\nThe Phoenix Airport Museum is the second largest airport art program in the nation, second only to San Francisco.
