\r\nA Fistful of Freedom
\r\nEast London, Eastern Cape, South Africa |  Fabric, thread, handmade paper, used tea bags; fiber embedment using scribble stitch, free motion machine embroidered and quilted

\r\nMandela was an incredible human being who made me proud to be a South African. He was a very rare politician" able to instill pride in the present, belief in the future, and forgiveness for the past. For this quilt I chose reference images that show his kindness, his humanity, and his strength of character. I wanted to show more than just the formal facade of this powerful statesman without ignoring his political message. I chose an image of an older man, one where his life is written in the many creases and furrows of his face. His inelegant hands (those of a boxer), raised in fists, are an expression of hard-won freedom rather than militant aggression. As he was able to unite black and white in hope, I included an image of Mandela's black-skinned hand clasping that of de Klerk's white one and lifting it in triumph. Lastly, I included the obvious symbols of barbed wire and his prison number; I firmly believe that it was during his many, many years of forced confinement that he became one of the greatest men of our time.","QuiltTitleF009":"A Fistful of Freedom","SubjQuiltF025":"Nelson Mandela","interviewerF007e":"Kathryn Harmer Fox","DateDataF006b":"6/25/2015","QuiltTopF054":"Fox, Kathryn Harmer","IfOtherF007d":"Museum employee","LocMadeF057a":"East London","ProvProvF057e":"Eastern Cape","ProvCountryF057f":["South Africa"],"DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","DateFinishF023b":"April 2014","ReasonsF060":["Art or personal expression","Commemorative"],"PresUseF062":["Museum collection"],"GenderF098":["Female"],"TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","OverallWidthF12a":"29 3/4\"","OverallLengthF012b":"29 1/2\"","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","ShapeCornersF013b":"Straight","OverallColorF14b":["Multicolor"],"LayFormatF024":"Nontraditional or art","UniqueF037b":"Various fabrics, sewing threads and wools, used tea bags, hand-made paper.","UniqueF038h":"Fabric and fibre embedments using scribble stitch, free motion machine embroidery quilting and wrapped and twisted cord making.","TopSourceF064":["Original to maker"],"ExhibitListF067a":""Conscience of the Human Spirit: The Life of Nelson Mandela", The International Quilt Conference Africa, Johannesburg, South Africa, July 2014. He and his wife Leah showed leadership in growing their work towards creating a better world for individuals, families, communities, and nations. He inspired people with his vibrant spirit and his expression of love for his wife and other people. I was especially inspired by Bishop Tutu's hands while he prayed; with thier hands, the Tutus have given other people wings to fly. The dove depicts the peace, freedom and love that the Tutus showed in their selfless service to the people and especially the children of this country. The sun is a depiction of their warmth and heartiness towards their fellow South Africans.
\r\n
\r\nThe roots of the tree symbolise their deeply grounded hope and faith as well as their caring and compassion for each other. Without grounded roots they could not have yielded the fruit they have. The Tutus are truly South Africans in heart and soul.

\r\nVan der Walt made her first quilt in 1987 when she was living for a year in Durham, Great Britain. When she returned to South Africa she took part in the first national quilt exhibition in Bloemfontein and, since then, has made theme quilts every 2 years. Van der Walt's quilts have been featured in numerous publications and in exhibitions in France and the United States, including one organised in Washington, D.C., as a tribute to Barack Obama on the occasion of his first presidential inauguration.

It is usually made out of white fabric. Desmond Tutu has been fearless in questioning the South African government's bias against the Dalai Lama. Both the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu have been awarded Nobel Peace Prizes. The washing peg refers to the establishment of the South African Domestic Workers Association (SADWA) of which Leah Tutu was a founder. Desmond Tutu was the first Black Archbishop of Cape Town, the highest position within the Anglican Church in South Africa. St. George's Cathedral was his base; hence St. George slaying the dragon, a metaphor that I selected to represent Apartheid. My reference was an image from a church in Lalibela, Ethiopia. The two hands are the Tutu's who married in 1955. Desmond Tutu was instrumental in transitioning South Africa to democracy and this is symbolised by Leah's hand casting a vote. The hand holding the egg is a symbol of power inspired by West African fabrics. Hold on to power too tightly and the egg will break, hold on loosely and the egg will break. Desmond Tutu has succeeded in holding power in balance. The landscape image refers to the gold mine dumps that surround the childhood homes of both Leah and Desmond Tutu. The hands across the chest are Desmond Tutu's wearing his Anglican ring, cross and gown. I chose to focus on hands as they are what humans use to create, build, and communicate with.

\r\nSince 1988 Tamar has worked with rural women's projects on crafts-based income producing projects in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. In 1996 she worked alongside Ndebele and Swazi women from community projects in Kwaggafontein and Ekulindeni to embroider panels for the Mpumalanga legislature chamber. This project renewed Tamar's interest in basic sewing skills and now specialises in using thread and needle to "draw" her art directly on to fabric.

\r\nA long walk to freedom: A tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela
\r\nPietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa | Embroidery thread, cotton fabric; machine embroidery, piecing, quilting; 75 cm x75cm
\r\n
\r\nWhen I started making this quilt I knew that I did not want to make an image of Nelson Mandela's face. I hoped instead to use the image of feet to evoke symbolic associations about his life and the sacrifices that he had made for all of us. His book Long Walk to Freedom inspired the initial machine embroidered feet. I used fabric that looked like the ocean and was reminiscent of the view towards Cape Town that Mandela had from his prison window on Robben lsland. I placed the feet at the top of the quilt because he was nearly hanged by the apartheid government; other viewers of the quilt might find religious associations with this placement. The fabric used for the prison pants was from a small piece that I bought years ago from a vendor from Maputo, Mozambique; Gra'a Machel, Mandela's third wife, was also from that country. The central blocks of the Log Cabin quilt pattern are photo transfers of newspaper articles of general life in South Africa; they show a contrast to his life of imprisonment and ours.","QuiltTitleF009":"A long walk to freedom: A tribute to the life of Nelson Mandela","AddNotesF132":"Annette has a wide range of interests in the arts :Beadwork: She was a mentor for 4 beadwork artists at the local Tatham Gallery for a period of four years. \r\n
\r\nAs a couple, he and his wife Leah were honoured in Cape Town in December 2015, Reconciliation Day, for their role as the country's moral compass by means of 'The Purple March.' People were encouraged to wear purple and consider the world 'purple' as an acronym for people, unity, reconciliation, peace, love and equality. With Desmond and Leah as the focal point, I have designed a compass with the point's enumerating many of the principles for which they strive, with the words 'peace, love and social justice' from the title of this project forming the four main points.
\r\n
\r\nBoth of them have been honoured with roses named after them, an apt symbolism of love, purity, devotion, inspiration, beauty, compassion and spirituality. Desmond has said, "Do your little bit of good where you are: it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world" and I hope that my little bits of bright African prints have put together a portrait of a couple full of 'joie de vivre' and a man who said in a magazine interview that his favourite word is "Yippee!"

\r\nA member of Fibreworks and an accredited judge for the South African Quilters' Guild, Walwyn says that "Textile has been my preferred medium of artistic expression since 1990 and my fibre art design process is usually a progression from my own photograph to a sketch, to a paper collage and eventually to a fabric collage. My work is now in collections in Switzerland, Germany, and the United States. My participation in meaningful projects such as this one and the previous one of quilts in tribute to Nelson Mandela, provide me with valuable creative challenges."

\r\nA Nation’s Hero
\r\nNewcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa | Shweshwe, cotton, buttons; raw-edge appliquéd, free machine embroidered, hand embroidered
\r\n
\r\nHow can we not want to make a quilt of Nelson Mandela? He was such an inspiration to so many and achieved so much; an ordinary man who became an extraordinary leader. As a lover of fabric I could not help myself paying extra attention to the shirts that Madiba was famous for wearing. I therefore decided to use the Shweshwe fabric for my background since this is a fabric unique to South Africa and commonly used in traditional clothing. The shape of my background also refers to our national flag. I depicted Nelson Mandela’s silhouette, an image that became all too familiar. I added hands to refer to the Nelson Mandela’s Children’s Fund for which he did so much in life and death. I added words like freedom, peace, dreams – all things he believed in.","essay":"I grew up on a farm in Newcastle, Kwa-Zulu Natal and still lives there with my husband and two sons. I am an accountant by trade and therefore all stitching should be done in straight lines and be accounted for. I was part of the fabric painting craze in 2000. My neighbour encouraged me to start stitching on my paintings and later taught me the basics of quilting. I did not even have a sewing machine and had to borrow one. I have entered my first quilt in 2004 in the Durban National Quilt Festival and won the Judges Choice Award - I was hooked. I enjoy making quilts - it is my way of stress relieve. After 10 years of quilting my fellow quilters never stop to amaze me with their work and are a constant inspiration.","photocredit079a1":"Dion Cuyler","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"The copyright belongs to the owner/artist.","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/31-27-205/CHSLM335.jpg"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/31-27-205/CHSLM335-zoom.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Beth Donaldson","dateverified":"2018-04-10","dateverified_era":"CE","Object Associator":"50-147-1","Pattern":"A NATIONS HERO","Maker":"[\"MURRAY, BARBARA\"]","Date":"2000-2025","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University and Michigan State University Museum","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","function":"Image - large display (550 or more pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","legacy_kid":"59-9A-1C5","project_id":"31","form_id":"27","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 00:08:47","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:12:35"},"sort":["A NATIONS HERO"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"u6-CXpEB8akQsUweSlS4","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"12-8-3725","InstProjNameF003a":"Michigan Quilt Project; Michigan State University Museum Collection; South Africa Quilt History Project; The Black Diaspora Quilt History Project; Quilts and Human Rights","InstNameF003":["Michigan State University Museum"],"InstInvContrNumF004":"04.0192","InstInvContrNumF004a":"2004:134.1","description":"Portraits of South African Black Women of the Anti-Apartheid Struggle

\r\nFina Nkosi is affiliated with the Zamani Quilting Sisters, a group of women in Soweto, South Africa who, facing the double exploitation of racism and sexism, formed a self-help organization and women's resource center in 1987.
\r\n
\r\nThe quilt was acquired as part of a South African Traditional Arts project component of a larger South African National Cultural Heritage Training and Technology Program (SANCH) with grant support from the Andrew J. Mellon Fund and Ford Foundation. Led by the MSU Museum, the MSU African Studies Program, and MSU's MATRIX: The Center for Humane Arts, Letters, and Social Sciences Online, the bin-national project was conducted from 1997-2003 in collaboration with a consortium of other U.S. and South African cultural, educational, and government organizations and units. The traditional arts project component worked with South African colleagues to document and present South Africa's extraordinarily rich, diverse craft activity, especially that of the New South Africa.
\r\n
\r\nThe quilt was previously displayed at an exhibition of the Craft Council of South, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2004.
