Hill at age 10, c.1876, according to donor. Edwin Bliss Hill earned national recognition as a printer bibliophile and scholar. When he died in Tempe in 1949, his private press had the longest record of continuous operation in the history of American amateur printing. Mr Hill founded the press in Detroit, Michigan in 1882 and his presses followed him to 4 additional locations. Lakeland, Michigan: Granite Reef Dam, Arizona where he was in charge of allocation of waters for the Bureau of Reclamation: Ysleta, Texas; and Tempe, Arizona.\r\n\r\nAn authority on Charles Lamb and Henry David Thoreau, Edwin Bliss Hill printed brochures, leaflets and periodicals and broadside related to these 2 authors, as well as items long established authors, contemporary authors, Sherlock Holmes, and the Bandar Log Press whose owner was Frank Holme.\r\n\r\nThis patchwork quilt is a gift to the Tempe Historical Society from his daughter, Mrs. Gertrude Hill Muir, librarian and author, who has gained recognition as an authority on literature, culture and anthropology of the southwest. Mrs. Muir is a graduate of the University of Arizona and received her Master's degree in library science from the U. of Denver.\r\n\r\nEntirely hand-stitched by Edwin Bliss Hill, the patchwork quilt was sewn when he was about 10, dating it around 1876. Mr. Hill's mother determined that her boys should master the art of sewing as well as the girls in the family, so each was given his choice of a major project to complete. Edwin Bliss Hill chose to make a quilt, an early display of the creativity and finger dexterity manifested in his lengthy printer career.\r\n\r\nFurther family ties to Arizona history are found in the fact that the brother of Edwin Bliss Hill was Louis C.
