Contruction: Piecing, The stripes are made of bands of material with the images of men running for federal office. For President: Abraham Lincoln, John Bell, Stephen A. Douglas, and John C. Breckinridge. For Vice President: H. Hamlin and Edward Everett. Floyd County Clerk: C.H. Strattan, Frank Pierce, and W.R. King. The hat band of Basil Duke is supposedly among the pieces. His hat fell off as he was fleeing from "the rebels," but he was later captured and taken prisoner. Pieces also include parts of a dress that belonged to Mrs. Charles S. Kerl, a daughter of Major Raizo (or Rizha) of the Seventeenth (or Seventh) U.S. Infantry. Both Captain and Mrs. Kerl were killed by Apache American Indians in Mexico on their return to Fort Bayard, New Mexico. This took place on or around March 3 or 12, 1871 near Casas Grande and Garaland (or Chihuahua), Mexico. The news was brought back by J.A. Muller to New Albany. Five purple cords have been attached across the side nearest the flagstaff as a hanging device.

Fabrics: Silk, Velvet, Many political ribbons have been cut and dyed and are included in the piecing. A few blocks of solid colored velvets are also included.
