WE LIVED IN THE COAL FIELDS OF EASTERN KENTUCKY AND MY MOTHER HAD MADE DOZENS OF QUILT. IN 1935 SHE BECAME ILL AND DIED IN MARCH OF THAT YEAR. HAVING THE RESPONSIBILITY OF TWO SMALL GIRLS MY FATHER PAID A LADY NAMED AUNT MABEL (NO RELATION) TO CARE FOR US. MONEY WAS VERY TIGHT AT THAT TIME SO HE PAID HER IN QUILTS (A TRUNK FULL) oUR FAMILY KEPT IN TOUCH WITH AUNT MABEL AND WE VISITED HER OFTEN UNTIL SHE MOVED TO VIRGINIA IN 1949. WE CONTINUED TO VISIT HER THERE AND EACH TIME WE LEFT SHE WOULD SAY \"THE NEXT TIME YOU GIRLS COME YOU CAN HAVE YOUR MOTHER'S QUILTS\" THIS WENT ON FOR MANY YEARS AND EACH TIME WE SAW HR SHE WOULD SHOW US THE QUILTS. IN THE MEANTIME I HAD A FAMILY OF MY OWN.
