Story about this quilt:

Through a series of 'Digital Stitch' embroidery circles, participants engaged with a variety of digital data to contemplate, reflect, share, materialise, touch, smell, and experience it in new ways. Held in various settings such as community centres, research labs, educational environments, and online platforms, these circles have facilitated the creation of samples contributing to the collective artworks that form the ‘Data Quilt’ series (Figure 1), of which this Data Quilt #1 is a part of. These workshops covered topics such as digital waste, the essence of computing, the conceptualisation of data as a material, the historical significance of women's work, repair as a starting point, methods of slow design research, embodied design practices, the intersection of data and stitching, and the concept of convivial tools, (Illich, 1973).

We address these themes through three approaches:
• Embodiment- to explore the topic real time through stitch as an act of embodying
• Reflection- finding existing data to reflect upon, react to and talk about together using stitch as an output
• Electronic abstraction- seeing textile itself as a means of data/energy storage. For this specific quilt, workshops were held at Waag, Amsterdam and Modestraat, Amsterdam and fall under the 'Reflective' theme.
