Old-Time Nosegay - Leaflet No. 27

By Edith B. Crumb.

The thirteenth flower for the border of the Nosegay quilt is the tulip. This flower lends itself to many colorings and materials. Perhaps that is the reason the designer of this quilt selected it, or she may have had in mind the grace of the flower with its soflty in-and-out curving petals.

Two of these tulips will be required, one for each side border strip. There is none in the bottom border strip.

Of course, you may use your own discretion in the arrangement of the border flowers. If there is one that you like particularly well there is no reason why that one cannot be repeated in the bottom strip. However, I do think that the ones originally chosen were decided upon because of the balance of shape, size and color.

One suggestion for the flower is to use some striking ragged looking striped prints. The lines of the stripes may be roughened a bit in drawing so that the effect is not as regular and even as found in ordinary striped shirting, let's say.

Or you may want to make the tulips in plain colors, using the deeper shades for the petals at the back of the flower and keeping the lightest tone for the large petal almost directly in front. You will also find checks and plaids that will be attractive.
