SUNFLOWER QUILT
IN APPLIQUE

The brightness of this sunflower quilt will lend charm and color to the room! You'll find it easy to applique.

SIZE: Approximately 68" x 110" finished.
SIZE OF BLOCK: 12 1/2" square finished.
NUMBER OF BLOCKS: 13 -- 15 appliqued, 8 plain.
NUMBER OF UNITS: Petal #1 Block-8 Quilt-120; Center #2 Block 1 Quilt 15; Stem #3 Block 1 Quilt 15; Leaf #4 Block 1 Quilt 15
MATERIALS:
(All yardages specified are approximate and of 36" wide fabrics unless otherwise stated.)
4 yrds. of 39" wide cotton fabric in white for the blocks.
4 yds. of 39" wide cotton fabric in pastel for ...(cut-off).
3/4 yd. of cotton fabric in yellow for petals.
1/8 yd. of cotton fabric in white or brown check for centers.
1/4 yd. of cotton fabric in green for leaves and stems.
O.N.T. Quilting Thread in color to contrast of match.
Lining: 3 1/8 yeds. of 72" wide bleached white muslin sheeting. (Launder before cuttin to size.)
Interlining: Cotton batting: If your quilt is larger than the size printed on wrapper of the cotton do not stretch the cotton to make it fit, as this will leave thick and thin spots. Piece the cotton by splitting the thickness about 1" from edges of both pieces to be joined. Cut away the upper half along the edge of one piece and the lower half along the edge of other pieced about 3/4-inch back. Lap the two thicknesses over one another 3/4 inch and baste together with long stitches.

CUTTING DIRECTIONS:
Blocks: Cut 23 blocks from white material -- each measuring 13 1/2" square.
After quilt has been set together -- place on floor. Slip a piece of brown wrapping paper under edge; trace arund triangle between blocks, cut out to use as pattern piece. Cut 12 such triangles from white material, allowing 1/2" around entire outside edge for seam. Repeat for corner fill-ins.
Strips and Border: Following diagram given below, cut 34 strips -- each 13 1/2" x 3 1/2"; 2 strips -- each 88 1/2" x 3 1/2"; 2 strips -- each 73 1/2" x 3 1/2"; 2 strips -- each 6 1/2" x 3 1/2"; these are the strips stitched around the blocks as shown in diagram -- 1/2" seams. Cut 2 strips -- each 70" x 4 1/2", and 2 strips -- each 115" x 4 1/2" for the outside boders.

HOW TO MAKE PATTERN PIECES:
Step 1: Trace off complete outline for the sunflower from Diagram A.
Step 2: Paste onto thin cardboard and cut around outline.
Note: This pattern is to be ussed for marking in sunflower motif outline on the blocks.
Step 3: Repeat Steps 1 and 2 for pieces shown in Diagram B. Dotted lines on these pieces indicate the turn under allowance for appliqueing.

HOW TO CUT PIECES: Step 1: Even fabric by tearing it or pulling a thread.
Step 2: Using a damp cloth, press fabric.
Step 3: Lay pattern on lengthwise grain of fabric and make a tracing line around pattern.
Step 4: Trace number of pieces needed, placing close together because seam allowance has been included on the pattern piece.

APPLIQUE: Step 1: Fold block diagonally in one direction; then in other direction to find center. Then place the complete sunflower motif along one of the diagonal lines, centering same. Trace around the motif.
Step 2: Following traced outline, pin all the pieces of motif in position as shown in Diagram A. Do not pin centers in place.
Step 3. Baste, turning in same allowance along all edges except edges that are overlapped by another -- these overlapped edges are not turned under. When applying a curved edge, pull slightly to form.
Step 4: When entire design has been basted in place, sew around edges with small invisible stitches, taking care not to pull stitches too tightly -- this puckers material.
Step 6: Pin and applique center in place on sunflower motif.

SETTING QUILT:
(1/2" seam are allowed. Press all seams open as sewn.)
Sew the 3 1/2" strips (that are 13 1/2" in length) between blocks, alternating the appliqued and plain blocks to form diagonal strips as shown. Then stitch the long 3 1/2" strips in place diagonally as shown.
Stitch the white side and corner triangle fill-ins in place as shown.
BORDER: Find center points of border stips; top, bottom and sides of quilt. Matching these center points, stitch a 70" x 4 1/2" strip to each side of quilt, making 1/2" seams. Stitch top and bottom strips to side strips where they meet.
LINING AND INTERLINING: Cut 1" smaller around than quilt-top. Place quilt-top, wrong side up on floor; interlining on top of it; lining (right side up, smoothing out all wrinkles) on top of interlining. Baste from center out through 3 layers (see diagram). Turn in border seam allowance (1/2"); whip-stitch in place.
QUILTING: Use a fine running stitch and contrasting or matching thread to quilt around sunflower motif.
Draw diagonal lines in plain blocks, then crosslines from the center of each block as shown in picture. Quilt along these lines, using a fine running stitch and matching or contrasting thread.
Quilt in same manner through the center of the strips. Quilt border in same manner, 1" in from ech edge.
