Peaceful Valley Friendship Quilt
Minneapolis; Minnesota; United States
This friendship quilt is 75 years old in 2022. It was dated April 21, 1947 and given in September 1947. Clara Gregerson Score (Mrs. Pete Score) pieced it together after neighbors in the Peaceful Valley School area embroidered their names and birth dates on the cloth squares given to them. Clara’s daughter, Phyllis Score, probably helped her mother sew the quilt.
In September 1947, Dorothy Ulicny Kopas and John Kopas Sr. hosted a neighbor’s farewell coffee party at their home. This very special, handmade quilt was given to Susana ‘Susie’ Yurik Michalik (Mrs. Mike Michalik) when she and Mike left the farm to move to Minneapolis in September of 1947. The Michaliks and Scores were neighbors. To get to the Michalik farm, up on the hill, you had to go through the Score farm.
At some point, Mrs. Michalik gave the quilt to one of her daughters – Mary Michalik Mickelson. Years later, Mary’s daughter Pat Mickelson Squires found the quilt in her mother’s cedar chest. Pat felt that she didn’t know many of the people on the quilt. She decided to pass it on to her cousin, Rieta Wallen Kopas, and her husband John. John and Rieta know the names of everyone on the quilt. It includes several of their relatives.
In October 2019, John visited with Phyllis Score and Diane Score Brown at Phyllis’ home in Menomonie. John showed them the quilt and they discovered that Phyllis had a bed covering made of the same fabric on her bed.
What a fun time they had talking about the 75-year-old quilt!
John Kopas Jr., son of Dorothy Kopas, who hosted the coffee party, David Score, and Diane Score Brown, grandchildren of Dorothy Kopas, and Clare Score who made the quilt, nephew and niece of Phyllis Score who helped her mother make the quilt.
