Victoria Miller: In 1980 I wanted to make something for my friend Kathy's craft fair. The Sears catalog provided ideas for quilted pillows. I drafted patterns from those pictures and the rest, as they say, is history. My first quilt was a Dresden Plate after making lots of quilted pillows. The quilt was made from scrap fabrics left over from those pillows. It was a privilege to go to the MQ shows. Gladys Raschka's absolutely beautiful applique quilts caught my eye. That's the kind of quilt I would like to make, I told myself! I tried some applique projects after that, not too successfully at first. Then in 1988 it was my good fortune to take a needle-turn applique class from Patricia Cox. I've been using Pat's patterns almost exclusively ever since. One of the things I learned from Pat besides applique was "Let the fabric do the work." The quilt I would like to mention is one I have dubbed "Mrs. Miller's Quilt." In 1999 in a quilting magazine I found a small black & white photo of an antique quilt made in the 1800’s by a Mrs. Miller from Canada. Pat drew up her version of the quilt from that small photo. (The original was a little too primitive for her graceful style.) Seems like this quilt took forever for me to find just the right fabrics. After consulting with Pat over fabric choice I finally finished the quilt in 2008. I entered the Mrs. Miller that year in the American Quilters Society show in Des Moines. I was absolutely amazed to win Best of Show. Maybe the lesson here would be to never give up.
