Grandma Myrtle's Tulip Quilt

Wyckoff; New Jersey; United States

This quilt, displayed over the back of a chair, was purchased for $75 on October 7, 2017 at the Hamburg Antique Center, 1 Main Street, Hamburg, New Jersey, USA. Research showed that the pattern, #6071 Tulip Garden, is from the Ladies Art Company, founded in 1889. The company became influential in the growing trend of naming quilt patterns because of their publication of catalogs where quilt blocks were named.

Tulip Garden was sold as a kit, with the “white muslin squares” stamped for placement of the the basket and tulips for the 12 decorative blocks and for the border. Paper patterns for the appliqué parts were also included in the $3 price. If the kit were purchased with sateen for the appliqué, the cost was $5. It is unknow if this was made from a complete kit, with purchased stamped blocks only.

I left a note with the clerk, asking the seller to contact me if there was any provenance available. Several months later, Ed Scott,  grandson of maker Myrtle Winters Scott, contacted me and we have had an ongoing email conversation where I learned about Myrtle. She was a homemaker and, for many years, quilted with the Ladies Aid Society of the Wyckoff, New Jersey Reformed Church. Myrtle was pictured in an an article describing the club, which was published in the Ridgewood, New Jersey Herald News on Februrary 18, 1967. The club averaged about 10 members and, although membership changed, some lades participated over the four decades that the club met. The ladies met in various homes and quilted on "rolling" frames.

Grandson (Ed) recalls: “I grew up next door. Many times I remember (1950’s) the dining room table being moved to the living room and the quilting frame was brought down from the attic and set up. Usually 3-4 ladies would come over. Quilt time was approximately 2 weeks to finish. I (age 10 or so) would be invited to sit in and do a bit. Also, sometimes in the eveing, I would help Gram piece together the component patches.”
