04-036; Portrait of a Young Man
1900-1909
Janet E. Finley Collection of Quilt History Photographs
Mounted Photograph c. 1902-1907
Photographer: Unknown
Size: 2.375" x 3" on a 3.25" x 4.25" mount
A Log Cabin quilt was the chosen background for this young man's cyanotype portrait. In this quilt, the light sides of the Log Cabin block are intentionally composed of alternating rows of darker and lighter prints that produce a secondary pattern as they repeat regularly. All the blocks are then assembled in a setting called Sunshine and Shadows, best described as alternating diamonds of dark and light.
