Room Scheme to be Planned

By Edith B. Crumb

Recently Mrs. Heman Grant, 29000 Glyn Court, came into possession of a box of heirlooms and among them was this attractive and interesting quilt top.

It is a variation of one of those old-time conventional tulip designs and the fascinating old- time red, green, and pumpkin yellow sprigged prints have been combined to create this charming top. The patches have been carefully cut and with the exception of a small part of the vine border (which is appliqued while the rest of the quilt is pieced) every bit is done by hand. However, there is a small amount of machine stitching on the border. To have a machine in 1872 (when the quilt was made) was really something to be proud of, and there is no better proof of this than that this time of sewing was used was used on the most prized possession-quilts.

Mrs. Grants mothers name was Cynthia King Ford and she was called Tinnie for short. After Cynthia was officially listed (probably in the family bible) the name was just about forgotten for Tinnie was the only name which was used thereafter.

At the top of this quilt there is a cross stitch Tinnie King Fords name with the date of making the quilt, which was 1872. Someone has ripped out the first two letters of Tinnie and this is a mystery which Mrs. Grant cannot explain.

So seriously did Tinnie Ford take her name that even all of her coin silver was marked "Tinnie"

This quilt was made in a little settlement called Teaspoon Corner near Leslie, Ingham County Michigan and with this interesting background, no wonder Mrs. Grant is anxious to preserve it and display it to the best advantage.

To do this she is planning to have an heirloom bedroom and has nice old pieces from her own and her husband's side of the family. To harmonize with this spread is an old rope bed and with these as the start this room should be charming in its old time simplicity.
