Gran Visits Us as a Surprise
Here are Margaret Dagg and Gran who are proud to show you the lovely Log Cabin quilt which was made by Mrs. Jessie Prendergast. The quilt contains 3080 pieces in the blocks and 800 yards of thread were used in the quilting. The picture was posed at the quilt club corner meeting in the lower level of the Studios WWJ - The Detroit News

Old and New Friends Chat at Corner Club Meeting

By Edith B. Crumb

The Quilt Club Corner meetings are just full of surprises and yesterday who do you suppose dropped in on us? You could never gusess so I'll tell you that it was Gran and I am sure that if you did not come yesterday you are sorry to have missed seeing her.

She has moved to Pinckney, lives right on the town square and just loves it. She wouldn't move to a larger place for anything in the world.

Just because I know so many of you would want to see her again I had her picture taken with another guest, Margaret Dagg (from London, Ont.) who is visiting her grandmother, Mrs. Margaret Mowatt, for a few weeks. The quilt which Gran and Margaret are holding is a Log Cabin made by Mrs. Jessie Prendergast, 12651 Robson avenue. Mrs. Prendergast is 79 years old and is a friend of Mrs. Mowatt's.

The quilt is of cotton pieces, all colors but dark blue seems to predominate. The borders are plain yellow and white strips. There are 3808 patches in the pieced part of the quilt and 800 yards of thread were used in the quilting which Mrs. Prendergast did on hoops.

Another guest was Mrs. Madge Kramer who moved to Holland Mich. last year. She came to Detroit for a short visit but couldn't go back without coming down to say "Hello" to us and we were certainly happy to see her. She said that she did not get down to the quilt show but read all about it in the papers and it just made her homesick to see all of her friends again.

Mrs. Pearl Rhodes was back after quite an absence. Had laryngitis and couldn't speak a word out loud, and she knew she couldn't talk so she just stayed away. Judging from the amount of work she turned out her voice must be back in good working order.

Gran and May Mancuse both wanted to thank all of their Corner friends for the lovely cards and gifts which they received for their birthdays, and Mrs. Millicent Harsh who just loves to come down to the meetings, also wants to thank all who rememberd her on her birthday.

Mrs. Inez Gray, 12044 Steel avenue, brought a guest, Miss Cora Moore who lives at 82 Oregon street, in Lapeer. Miss Moore does a great amount of crocheting but has not made any quilts. If she came to visit Mrs. Gray for a long time I am sure she would be making quilts before long.

Mrs. William Henry Blair, 2649 - 16 street, brought her sewing and worked every second all afternoon. She is making percale luncheon sets with fringed napkins to harmonize, the cloths being flowered and the napkins plain, each in a different color. So far she has only spent 33 cents on the four sets she is making for she is using bits of material she had tucked away - just left-overs.

Mrs. Charles Tinsley brought her daughter-in-law who lives at 183 Richmond avenue, London, Ont., Mrs. Tinsley worked all afternoon on the McClelland quilt which is coming along in record time. About three more afternoons and it will be finished.

What has happened to Mrs. Mary Strobilius? She and her sister and Mrs. Velma Feddick, Mrs. Kaye Clark, Mrs. Fred Clark, Mrs. Fred Cowper and many others were not with us yesterday: but we know that these are the holidays and when they are over they will be back with the Quilt Club Corner Members. Mrs. Ridler was also absent. Mrs. Mae McGrew thought surely she would be at the meeting yesterday but could not arrange to do so. Mrs. Mae Lawson is out of town and Mrs. F. X. Bonem is in Bay City on her vacation.
