(sigh!)\"\r\nThe quilt is a commemoration of the quiltmaker's 5th anniversary.\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? \"This quilt was my first. I have now been quilting 10 years.\"\r\n\r\nHow did you learn to quilt? \"Taught myself. This quilt is 'hunt and peck' stitched, I had no idea one could rock a needle and get 4 to 6 stitches at a time. I simply poked the needle straight down, then after snugging the thread, poked the needle back through -- 1/2 stitch at a time!!\"\r\nWhat was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? \"This was my only competition -- I hoped to win a national award. Winning for the state of Idaho was satisfying though.\"\r\nHas being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? \"I think it made my efforts more valuable in other people's eyes. I am not a purist by using only cotton for example. Just whatever color or texture or pattern works.\"\r\nCommemorates \"Hurricane Andrew\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? \"Since 1975 (23 years).\"\r\n\r\nHow did you learn to quilt? \"Self-taught. I have an art background, plus I know how to sew quite well. In my artwork I always enjoyed working on a large scale. I began with the traditional patterns in order to master the techniques, then I began designing my own quilts.\"\r\nWhat was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? \"Competition is always a personal goal. (Yes, prize money is of course an added bonus) Not that I am a competitive person, but it's a challenge to put my work up against others.\"\r\nHas being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Where did you learn the pattern? \"There is no traditional pattern because it is made up of a class of self portraits.\"\r\n\"Using fabric crayons, the pictures were drawn on paper then ironed to the cloth, pieced together and quilted.\"\r\nHow did you choose the materials used in your quilt? \"I love cotton and use it in every quilt. In this quilt, I had to use cotton/polyester for the self portraits because of the fabric crayons. Colors turned out brighter with cotton polyester.\"\r\n\"This class of kindergartners were very artistic. I loved the way they expressed themselves and I wanted to remember this group of children.\"\r\n\"I love children's art and wanted a quilt done by my class. I make quilts by lap quilting. That is quilting pieces and putting them together into a large quilt.\"\r\nWhat was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? \"I thought this kids quilt was unique. I thought I would win the prize. Then create an overall drawing and experiment with placement on paper. The next step is to draft on graph paper and finally to sew. My end product evolves as it is being created and rarely turns out the way I originally planned.\"\r\n\"To preserve and honor the lifestyle and heritage of the American West and that of my pioneering forebearers in Wyoming.\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? \"The last few years (~ 4), I have been working at it pretty regularly. Prior to that, family and work responsibilities prevented time availability. We have had five children (four living), two are still in grade school. I have a masters degree in Microbiology and have been teaching and working in medical labs.\"\r\n\r\nHow did you learn to quilt? \"The first quilt was made from magazine instructions back in 1977. Years later I took some quilting classes. Now I design all my own patterns and have developed that into a small business. My personal favorites are pictorial quilts which tell stories or record history.\"\r\nWhat was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? \"The contest challenged me to actually make the quilt which I had designed in my head. The first contest I entered was the Wyoming Centennial Quilt Contest. I designed and made a quilt that told Wyoming's history. It won 1st place.\"\r\nHas being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? \"Yes, it has made a difference. I own about 2,000 different fabrics --1/4 to 1/2 yd pieces of each. I did not buy any fabric specifically for this quilt, (except the border fabric.)\"\r\n\"Our home was undergoing extensive long term renovation. My quilt studio was the only 'finished' room. I would go in my studio, closing off the dust and distraction of renovation and just enjoy the creation of these blocks. I had no plan as to the finished size of the quilt, only that I 'needed' to sew!\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? \"20 years (in 1992, 14 years).\"\r\n\r\nHow did you learn to quilt? \"Checked a book out of the library. In 1978 our library had 3 quilting books. There wasn't much technical information at all. There was one quilt shop in Chicago (The Contemporary Quilt) where \"real\" quilters hung out. I saw them there but I didn't know one other person who was a quilter.\"\r\nWhat was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? \"I entered this quilt contest at the urging of a friend. I do enter a lot of competitions but this quilt was not constructed for that purpose and, in my opinion, lacked the technical perfection to be a winner. I made it for fun only.\"\r\nHas being a winner in the Land's End contest made a difference in your life? Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? \"You bet!! With all the recognition following that contest, guilds (quilting groups) began calling, asking me to teach and speak to their guild. Now I travel the country (even to Norway) lecturing on quilts and teaching quilting workshops. I have recently published a book on miniature quilts. I do not think the contest changed the way I looked at my work (I already felt personally successful) but it certainly changed the way others looked at my work. I was challenged by the colors and because of the strong friendship I wanted to create a quilt that would always remind me of her time in Africa. I've been using the scraps to make quilts (the smaller the better!). This quilt was made from colorful scrap fabrics and purchased black material.\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? \"I started making 'patchwork blankets' in about 1970. I made all my own clothes then and used the resulting scraps to make 'crazy' type quilts (tied, not quilted). I joined a group of quilters in about 1991 and learned the actual quilting stitch. (Previous to learning this I was using the laborious 'punching' technique to quilt.)\"\r\nWhat was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? \"Having worked out a template-free design that produced spiraling blocks, with scrap fabric, I wanted to see how the design would be viewed by judges. Has it changed the way you look at your work as a quilt maker? \"It is nice to have won the state prize for the first Lands' End quilt contest. THREADS magazine subsequently published an article I wrote about my construction techniques in issue #51 (March '94). I continue to do a lot of patchwork, but my medium is now felted wool (made from recycled sweaters) and had 2 more THREADS articles #61 and #73 published. Where did you learn the pattern? \"I designed the quilt using a contemporary take on a variety of traditional geometric patterns. The hand quilting adds significantly to the design.\"\r\n\"The quilt is machine pieced and hand quilted.\"\r\nHow did you choose the materials used in your quilt? \"I enjoy working with 100% cotton or other natural fibers. I also tend to use solely solid colors. By using solids I believe I avoid the \"dated\" look of many printed fabrics. I also enjoy the deep pure hues of solids and in particular dark colors. I usually incorporate black into the design to 'frame' the colored sections and to intensify the colors. I believe the effect of this is a more dramatic quilt.\"\r\nThis quilt is a commemoration of a public event, the All-American Quilt Contest: \"Several months after completing my 1st quilt, I was paging through the Lands End catalogue and noticed the ad for the All-American Quilt contest and request for entries. I made this quilt specifically for the contest; it was a personal challenge.\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? \"Since 1990.\"\r\n\r\nHow did you learn to quilt? \"I learned to sew as a young girl. I had caught the fabric dyeing bug and was really inspired by a group of yellow/gold mottled fabrics and some greens. Dyed a group of fuschias to complement them and eventually my quilt came together. Then in 1983 I tried hand piecing and hand quilting with much better results and have used those methods since that time. The remaining came from my personal collection of fabric. The whites are a collection of decorator, chintzes, dress goods and cotton.\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? \"I began in 1978, so I had been designing and making quilts for 15 years. I consider myself an art quilter, I use traditional techniques, but I interpret my own designs using 1990's technology. Antique blocks make up the border and people and houses and animals are shown in the body of the quilt. A delight to make.\"\r\nHow did you choose the materials used in your quilt? \"I used fabrics from the 30's to give the quilt an authentic look - and I found antique blocks in a shop that were perfect for the border. The green background was an old sheet that gave the quilt a pale, serene look of comfort and peace.\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? \"Since 1983. I have studied with Martha Skelton, Vicksburg, MS. She is a wonderful lady who has participated in the Folklife Festival in Washington. Where did you learn the pattern? \"I saw a similar pattern in a Better Homes and Gardens craft book published in 1978. The idea grew and evolved until I began the quilt blocks in 1991 or so.\"\r\nOther techniques used include: \"machine piecing, hand applique and quilting.\"\r\nHow did you choose the materials used in your quilt? \"I used scraps I had on hand for the baskets and the tulips; I allowed my fabric choices to be largely influenced and determined by what I already had, but I worked within a certain color scheme. I was just starting my 'scrap phase.' I hardly ever buy fabric anymore (except 'vintage' fabrics).\"\r\n\"I designed and made this quilt because of my love for scrap quilts and traditional design. Its name came from a conversation with a friend who said, upon hearing me bemoan my perceived shortcomings, 'You can try to make perfect quilts, but you do not have to be perfect.' This reminded me of the passage of scripture which begins, 'Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin.' But my quilt had tulips! And so I named it 'Consider the Tulips,' because in it is much of my striving for perfection.\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? \"Since about 1976. I took one class from Georgia Bonesteel, who lives nearby, and was beginning to be known as a 'famous quilter.' During the time I stayed in waiting rooms (to be near). I cut pieces and sewed blocks for the quilt top. A person my 83 year old friend had cut quilt pieces for gave her a piece of an unusual shade of green. I saw it and liked it and traded her darker green material for it. I took that green, off-white and green printed material (left over from another project) with me to hospital and cut pieces and sewed into blocks for this quilt top. At first I did not like the colors together. My daughter said, 'Mom are you sure these colors go together?' I said, 'That's all I have.' Finally I learned to like the looks of the quilt top.\"\r\nHow long have you been making quilts? How did you learn to quilt? \"The first quilt I pieced was when I was 25. I think my mother quilted it for me because I can't remember quilting it. In 1976 (when I was 47) I made a baby quilt for our first granddaughter. 19892, I made baby quilt for second granddaughter. At age 53, after 27 years of teaching in elementary schools, I quit. That's when I really started quilting and I haven't stopped since.\"\r\nWhat was your primary reason for entering the Lands' End contest? Do you frequently enter your quilts in competition? \"I entered the Lands' End contest because I thought it interesting. I had won one second place cash prize and two first place cash prizes in small contests and just wanted to seen what might come of my entering the contest.
