\r\n\tIn winter, we don't see the number of animals visible in other seasons, so when we do, it is a welcomed site.  I enjoy seeing a chickadee sitting on a bare branch, hanging on as the wind blows its feathers.  Sometimes you need to look closely as they blend into the gray-brown landscape.  Seeing these beautiful creatures withstanding the cold of winter gives me solace.  If they can make it to spring, I can too.

\r\nOne of my earliest memories is of sitting with my grandmother while she hand-pieced scrap quilts, so I chose a scrap quilt as my inspiration for this piece. The quilt is constructed from true scraps, left over from another project. Although I love improvisational piecing and the modern quilt aesthetic, much of the history of quilting involves precisely pieced designs, which is why I chose this little star as my focal point.

The exhibit comprised of antique carousel horses and circus posters. The Victorian Era was so popular with quilting and my favorite era to collect quilts. I wanted to pay homage to the American traveling circus of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The circus poster is part of a Barnum, Coup and Castello advertising campaign in New York dating about 1870. By 1891 the traveling circus was home to nearly 1500 employees and 85 rail cars. I often wondered what it would be like to call a train or a circus tent your home. Many did this for years, even a lifetime. I used quilting styles and fabrics from the period but also used new technology in my design. The print was made from an advertising print in an old book and copied onto canvas. I outline quilted the figure and stuffed them with cotton for a trapunto, 3-D effect. I did some highlighting of design with thread painting and used Peltex to create stability of the piece.","function":"Image - medium display (250-500 pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","verify":"yes","Pattern":"WELCOME HOME","Maker":"[\"SNYDER-STONE, TRACEY\"]","Date":"June 1, 2012","legacy_kid":"1-6-209","project_id":"52","form_id":"152","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-05-27 13:21:20","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:16:51"},"sort":["WELCOME HOME"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"4K5nWZEB8akQsUweoLb6","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"52-152-291","InstNameF003":["Quilt Alliance"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Quilt Alliance; Home Is Where the Quilt Is","InstInvContrNumF004":"50","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/52-152-291/50PhyllisKCampbell.jpg"],"QuiltTitleF009":"Welcome Home","OverallWidthF12a":"15 inches","OverallLengthF012b":"19.5 inches","DateFinishF023b":"June 1, 2012","FeaturesF053":"Cotton fabrics, cotton thread, cotton batting; machine pieced and machine quilted; hand embroidery","QuiltTopF054":"Campbell, Phyllis","LocMadeF057a":"Rockford","ProvStateF057d":"Illinois","description":"Although I have always loved to travel, there is a certain magic in the words “Welcome Home”. In this original “scrappy colorplay” – “Mix and Match” sampler I got to do both! In my “Two of a Kind” quilt, I used 1930’s reproduction fabrics, to create eight different foundation pieced 2.5 inch traditional blocks. Each block was used twice in the quilt, but looks different based upon color placement within the block. I’ve mixed up all the blocks! Can you identify all the matches?
