One of her patients, who I will call Rebecca, was very ill. She was upbeat and had the most important medicine available…HOPE. The definition of hope is to have trust that something wished for will happen. Rebecca certainly had hope for recovery from the disease claiming her life. To occupy time during treatments, Rebecca and her sister did handwork. She told the staff she was making quilt hearts for everyone in the clinic.

Cancer claimed Rebecca. Sometime later, her husband came in with quilt hearts for many. She had names on them and had picked special colors for each personality. Michelle's was purple, one of her favorite colors because she graduated from East Carolina University. Michelle was touched. One nurse didn’t know what to do with her heart and gave it to my daughter. The two hearts made their way to me. I finished the green one with embroidery that mimicked the purple one. I found fabric to complement both and designed the quilt with rays depicting Rebecca’s hope. I added beads to symbolize the sparkle she had until the end. I quilted it by hand to go with the delicate handwork on the hearts. Michelle displays it now in her office. I think Rebecca’s spirit lives on in this little quilt and in the hearts of the people who knew and loved her. I named it ‘While there’s life there’s hope, a quote from Cicero.’

Throughout my times of depression and anxiety, when nothing seemed comforting, it has been music that I turned to—for healing, inspiration, and peace. A photo of the finished quilt was sent to a friend who cared for a mother with severe Alzheimer’s disease. When she (a quilter and a musician) saw the photo—she spoke her first words in over two weeks. “What is that?” She proceeded to identify different music symbols and quilting patterns. The quilt continues to give me peace when I see it—and others when I share it. I believe in its “unspoken power.","photocredit079a1":"Photo courtesy of Elaine Ross","AccessF080":"Restricted","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-7/QHB-1.3.jpg"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-7/QHB-1.3-zoom.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Beth Donaldson","dateverified":"2021-02-24","dateverified_era":"CE","Pattern":"WHERE WORDS FAILMUSIC SPEAKS","Maker":"[\"ROSS, ELAINE\"]","Date":"2000-2025","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX, Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","function":"Image - large display (550 or more pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","ImageConF075a":"quilt","ImageTypeF076":"Color","SourceF077":"Digital","project_id":"41","form_id":"39","owner":"7","created_at":"2021-02-24 16:05:26","updated_at":"2024-02-26 14:36:04"},"sort":["WHERE WORDS FAILMUSIC SPEAKS"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"za5mWZEB8akQsUweh5Gd","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"41-39-59","InstNameF003":["Quilts and Health"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Quilts and Health; Women of Color Quilters Network; Black Diaspora Quilt History Project; Quilts and Human Rights","InstInvContrNumF004":"QHB-0.5","IdentPersonF006":["Quiltmaker"],"DateDataF006b":"2016","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"We Are All Warmed By The Same Sun","OverallWidthF12a":"54.5\"","OverallLengthF012b":"54\"","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","PredomColorsF014":["Brown","Gold","Yellow"],"OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","DateFinishF023b":"2012","LayFormatF024":"Nontraditional or art","ConstrucF038b":["Machine Applique"],"QuiltTechF049":["Machine quilting"],"QuiltTopF054":"Murrell, Helen","QuiltedByF055":"Murrell, Helen","LocMadeF057a":"Cleveland Heights","ProvStateF057d":"Ohio (OH)","ProvCountryF057f":["United States"],"ReasonsF060":["Art or personal expression","Commemorative"],"OtherSourceMat":"MacDowell, Marsha; Luz, Clare; Donaldson, Beth. We should never forget that the tragedies of the past might occur again. I made this quilt hoping that it will remind us all that we are ultimately one family. Returning from the hospital and his daily cancer treatments, they were a block from a subway station in New York City. It began to rain. Commuters rushed past them. Flo heard a voice say: "You need help, lady," and she looked up to see a homeless man, wearing jeans, sneakers and a cutoff army jacket. She felt a little fear and declined his help, saying: "No, we’re okay." But the homeless man said again: "You need help, lady." He picked up her suitcase and walked toward the subway. Flo and Leonard followed him and the three of them boarded the train. They all got off at Flo’s station and the homeless man hailed a taxi for her.
\r\n
\r\n"I pressed a $5 bill into the man’s hand before the cab pulled away," Flo said, "and I heard him say, softly: ‘Don’t abandon me.’" Flo has never forgotten his words.
\r\n
\r\nTwo years later, in 1985, Leonard, who had suffered from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, was recovering miraculously. And in the small town of Hop Bottom, Pennsylvania (population 385), Flo Wheatley stitched her first sleeping bag, using her kids’ outgrown clothing — jeans, shirts and sweaters. She and her husband drove into Manhattan and gave the bag to a man huddled in a doorway. She made eight bags that year.
\r\n
\r\nUgly Quilts
\r\n
\r\nNews of her sleeping bags spread through the rural area and soon neighbors were dropping off fabrics at her home. A local church invited Flo to speak and to demonstrate how to make the bags. She named the family project My Brother’s Keeper Quilt Group. She called the bags 'Ugly Quilts' so that volunteers wouldn’t think they were too difficult to make. The grass roots project continued to grow — women began gathering to sew and socialize. Many of the sleeping bags were delivered to Flo’s garage for distribution — her garage door remained unlocked to accept deliveries. In 1992, more than 5,300 'Ugly Quilts' were distributed to homeless people and to shelters in Manhattan and other large cities.
\r\n
\r\nThe Wheatley family created a single page of simple instructions on how to make an 'Ugly Quilt'. The first step is to sew pieces of fabric together to form a seven foot square, and then another one. These squares are joined together. Old drapes, blankets and mattress pads are added for padding and men’s neckties are used as handles. All the fabrics are recycled. There is a big demand for these instructions.
\r\n
\r\nA mail crew arrives at Flo’s home every Wednesday morning for breakfast and to open the mail bags. There are requests for instructions from all over the United States as well as other parts of the world. A missionary in Mexico asked for instructions to make a bag for himself and to teach others to make sleeping bags. There was news from American volunteers at an army camp in Germany: supply planes had dropped 'Flo-designed' sleeping bags to the refugees in Bosnia.
\r\n
\r\nIn Mesa, Arizona, they have just completed 2,000 sleeping bags. In Fort Ogden, Florida, they have made one bag every week for five years. Flo believes that more than 100,000 sleeping bags have been made since 1985.
\r\n
\r\nEleanor Dugan and Becky Gordon co-founded the San Francisco group. By avocation, they are both quilters. They have gained national recognition exhibiting their quilts in regional shows. But today, they are committed to making sleeping bags. Becky said: "It’s simple. If you can tie a shoe lace, you can help make a sleeping bag. And a sleeping bag can save the life of a homeless person."
\r\n
\r\nThe informal group meets in Eleanor’s home, which looks like a warehouse. Hilton Hotels recently donated 200 bedspreads and mattress pads, filling her living room almost to the ceiling. Her dining room contains a large cutting table and a sewing machine. And there’s a sewing machine in the kitchen. "It is not Martha Stewart living*," said Eleanor, "but these bags are literally the difference between life and death to some of the homeless." Eleanor speaks and gives demonstrations at churches, schools, clubs, organizations, and the San Francisco County jail.
\r\n
\r\nAt a recent Bronx Community Center demonstration, Flo was expecting volunteers to come and make bags and distribute them to the homeless. But homeless families arrived on the scene, including children. They spent the day making bags. When they left, they took the bags and slept in them that night.
\r\n
\r\nBenjamin Creme has confirmed that the homeless man who came to Flo’s aid near the New York subway station in 1983 was the Master Jesus. When Flo heard this, she responded: "I believe it! The basis of my life is in Christ. Our work does not belong to any particular denomination. It is open to everyone. We appeal to people who understand the suffering of other people and have the ability to reach out."
\r\n
\r\n* Martha Stewart is a popular proponent of gracious living, American style.

I did this quilt in honor of those who have lost their battle with breast cancer. A good friend, Laurie, in Canada was going through chemotherapy and volunteered to do a challenge [quilt] for the 2006 Machine Quilters Expo in New Hampshire. I joined the challenge and made this quilt. Four blocks contain the Breast Cancer Ribbon pattern. The Center block contains the inspirational message of: \"Get them Checked,...Get them Checked Often\". The center block has the Breast Cancer Ribbon, the American Sign Language symbol of \"I love you\" with the words below, and a pair of breasts….Breast Cancer Awareness is an important fact for women and men. Breast self exams, doctor checks and mammograms help reduce the devastation of breast cancer advancement. These words were quilted into this quilt with traupunto/cutaway method. To tie them together, I quilted breasts of all different sizes--a few with mastectomies. I painted the words and included breast cancer statistics for different races. Crosses were made from the backside of Breast Cancer bracelets, and 4 people's names and date of death were added. Four different style bracelets appear on the border with words of \"courage, hope, strength and endurance\". Breast Cancer ribbon pins were applied in the main Breast Cancer Ribbon. Four Angel pins were applied to the quilt to watch over all. Happy face heart erasers were applied to make you smile. I created a \"stop breast cancer\" sign with a ribbon in the center….Remember, get them checked, and do it often, so your name will never end up on my quilt.","photocredit079a1":"Terry Snyder Photography, Waukee, Iowa","AccessF080":"Restricted","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-46/QHB-4.19.jpg"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-46/QHB-4.19-zoom.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Beth Donaldson","dateverified":"2021-02-24","dateverified_era":"CE","Pattern":"THEY ARE JUST BOOBS UNTIL YOU LOOSE THEM","Maker":"[\"ROLEK, DEBBIE\"]","Date":"2000-2025","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX, Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","function":"Image - large display (550 or more pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","ImageConF075a":"quilt","ImageTypeF076":"Color","SourceF077":"Digital","project_id":"41","form_id":"39","owner":"7","created_at":"2021-02-24 16:06:20","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:15:19"},"sort":["THEY ARE JUST BOOBS UNTIL YOU LOOSE THEM"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"xK5mWZEB8akQsUweh5Gd","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"41-39-50","InstNameF003":["Quilts and Health"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Quilts and Health","InstInvContrNumF004":"QHB-5.3","IdentPersonF006":["Quiltmaker"],"DateDataF006b":"2016","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"The Yellow Boat","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","PredomColorsF014":["Red","Cream","Yellow","Blue"],"OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","DateFinishF023b":"2011","LayFormatF024":"Block pattern","ArrangeBlockF028":"Straight","SpacingF029":["Separated by plain sashing"],"QuiltTechF049":["Machine quilting"],"QuiltTopF054":"Sees, Dawn","QuiltedByF055":"Sees, Dawn","LocMadeF057a":"Columbia","ProvStateF057d":"Missouri (MO)","ProvCountryF057f":["United States"],"ReasonsF060":["Art or personal expression"],"OtherSourceMat":"MacDowell, Marsha; Luz, Clare; Donaldson, Beth. \r\nLana Rae (Dunn) Eisenbraun who lived in Warren, Ohio bought a large box of antique quilt squares at either an auction or an antique store, the whereabouts and date of purchase unknown. A friend was with her at the time and they split the cost and the squares.
\r\nThe Quilter
\r\nShe was MUCH more than a housewife. Lana had meticulously cleaned and sewed the purchased squares together on the back, she matched the original embroiderer’s colors, materials and styles to embroider them together on the front. Lana added the black velvet border and completed the backing. She then attached a strip of velcro to the back of the black velvet border and her husband, Don, used a wood board with the other half of the velcro attached to hang the quilt above their beds headboard. It was taken down when Lana saw it was starting to stretch on one corner.
\r\nThe Name ‘Port Hope’
\r\nThe owner named the quilt in the memory of Lana. All of Lana’s work was done while she was dealing with the side effects of chemotherapy. She had four different bouts with cancer. She won three bouts but lost to the fourth in 2009. When I saw the name “Port Hope” embroidered onto one patch I thought of the port on Lana’s chest that was used to deliver chemotherapy. To Lana it was liquid hope.
\r\nThere are cities named Port Hope. One of the cities is on the southern shore of Lake Erie in Canada, the other city is in the state of Michigan along the east shore of Lake Huron.","photocredit079a1":"Pearl Yee Wong","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"Michigan State University Board of Trustees","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-2/QH15.0001.jpg"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-2/QH15.0001zoom.jpg"],"Detail 1":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-2/QH15.0003.jpg"],"Detail 2":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-2/QH15.0004.jpg"],"Detail 3":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-2/QH15.0005.jpg"],"Detail 4":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/41-39-2/QH15.0002.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Beth Donaldson","dateverified":"2015-02-20","dateverified_era":"CE","Pattern":"THE PORT HOPE QUILT","Maker":"[\"MAKER, UNKNOWN\"]","Date":"Timespan","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University, Michigan State University Museum, Quilt Alliance","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","CreditLineF080b":"Courtesy of Michigan State University Museum","CopyRestF080c":"Michigan State University Museum","DistribRestF080d":"Michigan State University Museum","DisplayResF080e":"Michigan State University Museum","LicenseF080f":"Michigan State University Museum","legacy_kid":"6B-FF-1","project_id":"41","form_id":"39","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 04:02:04","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:15:19"},"sort":["THE PORT HOPE QUILT"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"rK5mWZEB8akQsUweh5Gd","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"41-39-26","InstNameF003":["Quilts and Health"],"InstProjNameF003a":"Quilts and Health","InstInvContrNumF004":"QHB-3.15","IdentPersonF006":["Quiltmaker"],"DateDataF006b":"2016","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"The Mastectomy Quilt","OverallWidthF12a":"64\"","OverallLengthF012b":"52\"","ShapeEdgeF013":"Straight","OverallColorF14b":["Multicolor"],"OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","DateQuiltF023":"1976-1999","DateFinishF023b":"1992","LayFormatF024":"Nontraditional or art","QuiltTopF054":"Marshall, Suzanne","QuiltedByF055":"Marshall, Suzanne","LocMadeF057a":"Clayton","ProvStateF057d":"Missouri (MO)","ProvCountryF057f":["United States"],"ReasonsF060":["Art or personal expression","Therapy"],"OtherSourceMat":"MacDowell, Marsha; Luz, Clare; Donaldson, Beth. I was also concerned that many women do not realize they have a choice about implants and cosmetic surgery. It is not necessary to conform to society's image. The story of the quilt reads from left to right. A healthy, whole woman walks along with everything right in her world. Then she gets a mammogram. She receives a diagnosis. She has the surgery. After her recovery, she goes back to the doctor, who asks if she would like to have more surgery for implants. She says no! The message of the quilt is enjoyment of life amid flowers and music. Fear of disfigurement is no excuse for postponing a mammogram.
