\r\n'Moral Conscience' of not only South Africa but also the world.
\r\n
\r\nDesmond and Leah Tutu have led the way for us South Africans with their high principles that include the values of Honesty, justice, equity, and truthfulness.
\r\n
\r\n'The Arch' as Desmond is affectionately known was outspoken about apartheid, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his clear views and fearless stance.
\r\n
\r\nThe Truth and Reconciliation Commission was headed by 'The Arch.' The meetings took place in the 'Regina Mundi' - the Queen of Soweto - which is the largest Roman Catholic Cathedral where so many people found sanctuary in their time of need.
\r\n
\r\nHe and Leah are the founders of the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation which 'harnesses, consolidates, preserves and propagates their values and principles.
\r\n
\r\nIn a country (and the world) beset with so many problems we are so blessed to have Someone with their concern for the poor, the hungry, the oppressed and the Voiceless.*

\r\n
\r\nBeaumont has a bachelor's degree in art and a higher education diploma and taught for a number of years. She has been an active member of the Kloof Village Quilters Guild, Natal Quilters Guild, South African Quilters Guild, and Fibreworks. She has exhibited her work in national and international exhibitions and has been featured in numerous publications. As she says "My work includes my love for Africa ... [and] the essence and history of our heritage."

\r\nBorn in 1968 Betani has been a member of Keiskamma Art Project since the project's beginning in 2000. The project is one of many craft-based economic development projects established in South Africa, particulary for women in rural areas, to provide means for them to earn or supplement income. These projects often serve as mechanism to also address other community-based needs in education and health care. The work of the women involved in the Keiskamma Art Project has been shown in venues around the world and several artists participated in a special arts and health program at the 2012 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D. C.

\r\nUkuqala Okutsha (A New Beginning)
\r\nPotchefstroom, North West, South Africa | Hand-dyed cotton, silk, cotton/polyester threads and batting; machine pieced, machine appliquéd and quilted, hand painted
\r\n
\r\nThe quilt represents South Africa, a new beginning, from 1994 – 2014. The quilt is symbolic of the new South Africa with President Mandela as the creator of freedom.
\r\n
\r\nIt is a depiction of Mandela looking out of a window at the prison on Robben Island at the sunrise over the sea. Seeing the sun rises every morning, he also saw in his mind the sun rising for South Africa and the role he could play. The new South African flag, draped around Mandela’s shoulders, is symbolic of the new South Africa – a country for all. I chose a Xhosa name for the title because Mandela is a Xhosa.","photocredit079a1":"Dion Cuyler","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"The copyright belongs to the owner/artist.","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/31-27-203/CHSLM326.jpg"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/31-27-203/CHSLM326-zoom.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Beth Donaldson","dateverified":"2018-04-10","dateverified_era":"CE","Object Associator":"50-147-1","Pattern":"UKUQALA OKUTSHA A NEW BEGINNING","Maker":"[\"VAN DER WALT, ELMINE\"]","Date":"2000-2025","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University and Michigan State University Museum","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","function":"Image - large display (550 or more pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","legacy_kid":"59-9A-1C3","project_id":"31","form_id":"27","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 00:08:45","updated_at":"2024-02-26 14:34:27"},"sort":["UKUQALA OKUTSHA A NEW BEGINNING"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"zK5kWZEB8akQsUwetFJR","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"31-27-392","InstProjNameF003a":"South Africa Quilt History Project; The Black Diaspora Quilt History Project","InstNameF003":["South Africa Quilt History Project"],"TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"Tutu Delft","OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","UniqueF037b":"Delft-style porcelain, cobalt oxide, yarn","QuiltTopF054":"Tully, Ann-Marie, (top tile)","QuiltedByF055":"Hearn, Jenny assembly and quilting","LocMadeF057a":"Johannesburg","ProvProvF057e":"Gauteng","ProvCountryF057f":["South Africa"],"ReasonsF060":["Art or personal expression","Challenge or Contest entry","Commemorative"],"PresUseF062":["Artwork/wall hanging"],"ExhibitListF067a":"Ubuntutu: Life Legacies of Love and Action, was displayed at the Nelson Mandela Gateway Museum, Cape Town, South Africa from October 3 - November 2016; and Stellenbosch University Museum, Stellenbosch, South Africa, November 24, 2016 - February 28, 2017.","OtherSourceMat":"MacDowell, Marsha and Brown, Aleia; Ubuntutu: Life Legacies of Love and Action: Quilt Tributes to Desmond and Leah Tutu by South African and American artists, Michigan State University Museum and Women of Color Quilters Network, 2016, page 37.","OwnershipF082":"Private","OwnerNameF082a":"Merithy Eccles, Ann-Marie Tully, Jenny Hearn","essay":"[Tully] The plaque I produced to be included in this project is a "Delft-style" porcelain plaque with an image rendered in cobalt oxide based on a photograph of Desmond and Leah Tutu's wedding. I felt that this celebration of their love for one another is an important element in a quilt commemorating the lives of these remarkable individuals. The monochromatic "Delft-style" rendering in porcelain is a facet of my art production and several seemed suitable for the rendering of individuals who defied the tyranny of colour.

\r\n[Eccles] The Arch, as he is affectionately known, has played an integral part in helping South Africa and South Africans come to terms with a violent past, not least in his roles as Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) established in 1995. Under the weight of testimony received, the image of the Arch holding his head in hands is iconic.
\r\n
\r\nPortraiture should convey compelling emotions and invite us to engage with emotion. The portrait of Archbishop Desmond Tutu is of a man bearing up under pressure, frail humanity prevailing against all odds to remain human, finding strength to offer some comfort and solace to another fellow South African.
\r\n
\r\nThis piece is of particular significance to me as a childhood friend was killed in the Heidelberg Tavern bombing, an event which was aired at the TRC. Subsequently, the mother of the slain girl reconciled with the Azanian People's Liberation Army [the underground military wing of the Pan African Congress] commander who gave the bombing order. The two undertook programs to try and bridge the gap between perpetrators and victims, actions which many found difficult to digest. I believe that reconciliation is a valuable although costly endeavor.
\r\n
\r\nThe portrait is red, a vivid colour symbolising both the priesthood and the nature of the work that Archbishop Tutu undertook at that time. Knowing that the tile is to be subsumed into a larger piece is intriguing as often in life we make contributions to a cause or project without knowing what the final outcome will be.

\r\n
\r\nTully works in painting, ceramic, and textile media production. Her work is widely exhibited in South Africa and examples of her art are now in South African private and public collections. She has worked as a curator, arts educator, lecturer and has authored academic publications.
\r\n
\r\nEccles is an artist who expresses herself through portraits in oils on canvas and wood. Most of her work involves portraiture or people in everyday walks of life. She says she "seeks to capture the emotion of the moment, be it grief or glee, regret or regard."

\r\nFor to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others. – Nelson Mandela
\r\n
\r\nWith Nelson Mandela’s release and the elections of 1994, a new regime in South Africa was born and with Nelson Mandela at the helm, we had peace and a new vision for a better South Africa – ‘The Rainbow Nation’ as Desmond Tutu described us. Now 20 years into democracy and with the elections of 2014 over, we are well and truly established onto a path of equality for all – a path that Madiba dreamt of and made possible for all South Africans.
\r\n
\r\nThis Madiba quilt project appealed to me on all levels. I have an extensive collection of photographs and wanted to use them in this quilt to tell of the injustice suffered by so many who were deprived of the beauty of their country. I used tea bags to give the feel and texture of the prison walls, and used black and white fabric and threads, to symbolize the struggle between black and white. Madiba is raising his fist just as he did on that day that he walked, hand in hand with his wife Winnie, to freedom.","essay":"I was born and raised in the Free State in South Africa, where apartheid was particularly virulent. With Nelson Mandela’s release and the elections of 1994, a new regime was born and with Nelson Mandela at the helm, we had peace and a new vision for a better South Africa – ‘The Rainbow Nation’ as Desmond Tutu described us. I have been a quilter and fibreworker for the last 20 years, and this Madiba Challenge appealed to me on all levels. I have an extensive collection of photographs and wanted to use them in this quilt to tell of the injustice suffered by so many who were deprived of the beauty of their country. I used tea bags to give the feel and texture of the prison walls, and used black and white fabric and threads, to symbolise the struggle between black and white. Madiba is raising his fist in my wall hanging - just as he did on that day that he walked hand in hand with his wife Winnie to Freedom. My quilting journey has been a long and varied one. Having small children in the 80’s, I started with evening embroidery classes which opened up Pandora’s box. An Afro/American class with Rosalie Dace broke the boundaries of traditional quilting, and I have explored my own ways of putting fabric work together since then. I am seduced by colour, so working in black and white has been an interesting experience. Over the years I have been fortunate to do classes with many wonderful teachers. Local teachers include Odette Tolksdorf, Jeanette Gilks, Jutta Faulds and Kathryn Harmer Fox, to name but a few. Village Quilters, the guild I belong to here in Durban, has invited teachers such Caryl Bryer Fallert from America and Gloria Loughman from Australia to teach and inspire. I have attended a quilt show in Paducah and the Quilt and Stitch Show in the UK. Done a class with Nancy Crow, Bill Walker and attended a Ricky Timms’ seminar at the International Quilt Convention held in Johannesburg annually. I love attending classes as I learn so much, but then have to remember to make my work my own. My fabric stash has grown considerably with the dye lessons from Marjorie McWilliams at Quilt University. In the last two years, I have built on a wet studio next to my sewing room. It has glass windows and the most beautiful view into the trees. The birds love it – early in the morning the trumpeter hornbills, as well as a thrush sit on the veranda and knock on the windows. One can only assume they see themselves reflected! It is wonderful to have the space and the time to work in peace. My children are grown up, and I can dye and print and sew to my heart’s content. From the computer, to the printer, to the design wall as big as the back wall in the studio, then the fabric choices – it is endless fun. Everything is set up and the quote “Imagination is a transcendental wonder” applies in every way. I have been a member of Fibreworks for the last fourteen years. Fibreworks was created by a group of quilters whose aim is to promote Fibre as a serious art form. Our work encompasses a large range of techniques, materials and approaches that give us, the fibre artists, endless possibilities to explore our creativity in many ways. Now 20 years into democracy, with the elections of 2014 over, we are well and truly established onto a path of equality for all – a path that Madiba dreamt of, and made possible for all South Africans. 'Without forgiveness there is no future.'
\r\n'South Africa, so utterly improbably, is a beacon of hope in a dark and troubled world.'
\r\n'Do your little bit of good where you are: it is those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.'
\r\n'I am not interested in picking up crumbs of compassion thrown from the table of someone who considers himself my master. I want the full menu of human rights.'
\r\n'I don't preach a social gospel: I preach the Gospel, period. The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ is concerned for the whole person. When people were hungry, Jesus didn't say, 'Now is that political or social?' He said, 'I feed you.' Because the good news to a hungry person is bread.'

\r\nI chose various deep pink magenta colours as magenta is so synonymous with the Archbishop's attire and then I added rich liturgical colours. The purples combine the calm stability of blue mixed with the energy of red, hinting to me some characteristics of the Archbishop.

\r\nI have 37 years of personal quilting experience in traditional and art quilt making. I am a founder member of the Greater Rand Guild, Vaal Triangle Guild, and Kouga Quilters. I am an accredited judge with the South African Quilt Guild, have been recognised in South Africa as a Master Quilter, and have exhibited my work in national and international shows. My work has been featured in South African, European, and Japanese publications.

\r\nI use fabric and thread in the same way I do pencil and paint - laying it down on the canvas in ways that describe what I see - letting the subject slowly emerge by manipulating the fabric snippets; making them appear other than just little pieces of shirt or dress or curtain - making them blur and fuse into patches of skin or feather or robe. I use an assortment of offcuts; these include scraps of fabric leftover from my other projects, donated to me by dressmaking friends, or cut from second-hand clothing that I buy from hospices and other second-time-around places. It pleases me greatly to be able to create something new from used, worn, and discarded stuff. It pleased me even more greatly to do a portrait of this great man and his wife.

\r\nI have always been passionate about sewing and when I retired from teaching economics, I did a quilting course and got hooked! I belong to our local quilt guild and the regional guild in KwaZulu-Natal. I share my skills with a group of young girls in a sewing club and often give quilt classes to adults. I enjoy the challenge of making a quilt for a cause. I feel priviledged to be able to make a tribute to Desmond and Leah Tutu, and to honour the work they have done for South Africa and the world.

It honours their commitment to reconciliation, and their global mission of creating a fairer, more caring world.
\r\n
\r\nThe origami heart is central to the design of the quilt. A heart is a symbol recongized across many cultures and represents the simple act of saying "I love you." When integrated with the ancient Japanese art of origami, with its concept of transformation, it begins to represent the concepts of an eternal, never-ending, and always one - the epitome of Desmond and Leah Tutu's relationship and work together. Through the many twists and turns that helped shape events and led South Africa towards justice and freedom, they've always been one, and Leah is often credited as being the glue that holds it all together. The magenta colouring of the heart is the shade of an Anglican Bishop's Cassock, and celebrates Desmond Tutu's accomplishments as Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town.
\r\n
\r\nThe Heart is filled with the colours of the rainbow, and Desmond Tutu is generally credited with coining the term "Rainbow Nation," a metaphor that has entered mainstream consioucsness to describe South Africa's ethnic diversity.
\r\n
\r\nThe grey background represents the catalyst for countries to start healing themselves. The green border speaks of the successes achieved in creating an environment of love and acceptance, of all races and cultures, throughout the world.
\r\n
\r\nThe words etched on the quilt are those of a prayer by Desmond Tutu.

\r\nBurtenshaw began life-long involvement in colour and fabric by making dolls' clothes and later clothing for herself. Now a passionate quilt artist, she is a member of Quadrille Quilters. She has taught at national quilt festivals in South Africa and her work has been featured in exhibitions and publications. Burtenshaw says that, in making this quilt, it was the first time she used lettering and colouring symbolism as major design elements.

I have included just a few on my quilt.
\r\n
\r\nJoy - in spite of the injustices and sorrows Archbishop Tutu has witnessed over the years, he has always maintained a stance of exuberant joy.
\r\n
\r\nCourage - whether it be standing up against the Apartheid government or speaking out against corruption in present times, Desmond Tutu has never been fainthearted in standing up for the truth.
\r\n
\r\nGrace - never before did our country need grace in a leader as during the time of the Truth and Reconciliation Committee. Archbishop Tutu wept as he listened to the stories of terror, injustice, and sadness, yet he showed us the way of forgiveness. He was the very picture of God's grace and goodness during that time.
\r\n
\r\nI believe that behind every Godly man stands a woman of great faith, and consistent prayer. I honour Mrs. Leah Tutu for the way she has supported her husband, and for the many years when she has shared him with our country, and indeed, the world.
\r\n
\r\nMay they continue to walk in the blessing of God.

\r\nSvensson is, by profession, a teacher, having taught piano lessons for 40 years, school music for 15 years, and quilting classes since 1993. She and her husband, Len, were instrucmental in bringing the Electric Quilt software to South Africa in 1992; she has also taught EQ classes for many years. Svensson has won awards for her work locally, nationally and internationally. She is a SAQA recognised teacher, a designated Master Quilter, and a memer of several quilt guilds. Svensson finds that quiltmakers easily forge friendships and that within the quilting world they are able to "look past the divided lines of economic stature, colour, race, politics, education, and religion."

\r\nThe Mandela Story
\r\nVenda, Limpopo, and Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa | Hand-dyed cotton, commercial cottons, polyester batting; machine pieced and quilted
\r\n
\r\nIn the very north of South Africa, between the Zoutpansberg Mountains and Zimbabwe is a region of harsh, dry climate where only thorn and baobab trees flourish. It is here in this uncompromising environment that Venda peoples scratch a meager subsistence from planted mielies (corn), sweet potatoes, and chilies and by keeping a few goats and chickens. The oral traditions of the Venda are rich and some women, through a project initiated by Venda scholar Ina le Roux, are now rendering their stories in embroidered cloths that are sold to supplement their income. Cloths are sold singly or pieced together, as in this one, to form a wall hanging or quilt. Quilt artist Jenny Hearn pieced together this set.
\r\n
\r\nThe first cloth here depicts Nelson Mandela in his youth as a cattle herder. The next shows the simple rural life of Venda where women make pots with river clay; these pots may be interpreted as vessels of hope for a better future. The third shows 1994, the end of apartheid and people going off to vote. The fourth picture is of Mandela, the protector of his people, sitting under the baobab.","photocredit079a1":"Dion Cuyler","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"The copyright belongs to the owner/artist.","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/31-27-207/CHSLM-MQ297.jpg"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/31-27-207/CHSLM-MQ297-zoom.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Beth Donaldson","dateverified":"2018-04-10","dateverified_era":"CE","Object Associator":"50-147-1","Pattern":"THE MANDELA STORY","Maker":"[\"VENDA WOMEN TAMBANI ARTISTS ASSISTED BY INA LE ROUX.\"]","Date":"2000-2025","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University and Michigan State University Museum","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","function":"Image - large display (550 or more pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","legacy_kid":"59-9A-1C7","project_id":"31","form_id":"27","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 00:08:48","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:12:35"},"sort":["THE MANDELA STORY"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"4K5kWZEB8akQsUwetFJS","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"31-27-412","InstProjNameF003a":"South Africa Quilt History Project; The Black Diaspora Quilt History Project","InstNameF003":["South Africa Quilt History Project"],"TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"The Man in the Pink Dress","OverCondF015":"Excellent/like new","DateQuiltF023":"2000-2025","DateFinishF023b":"2016","FiberTypesF035":["Cotton","Linen"],"FabricTypeF036":["Velvet"],"UniqueF037b":"Netting","ConstrucF038g":["Hand embroidery","Machine embroidery"],"MatUsedF048":"Batting","QuiltTechF049":["Hand quilting"],"QuiltTopF054":"Niederhumer, Gina","QuiltedByF055":"Niederhumer, Gina","LocMadeF057a":"Cape Town","ProvProvF057e":"Western Cape","ProvCountryF057f":["South Africa"],"ReasonsF060":["Art or personal expression","Challenge or Contest entry","Commemorative"],"PresUseF062":["Artwork/wall hanging"],"ExhibitListF067a":"Ubuntutu: Life Legacies of Love and Action, was displayed at the Nelson Mandela Gateway Museum, Cape Town, South Africa from October 3 - November 2016; and Stellenbosch University Museum, Stellenbosch, South Africa, November 24, 2016 - February 28, 2017.","OtherSourceMat":"MacDowell, Marsha and Brown, Aleia; Ubuntutu: Life Legacies of Love and Action: Quilt Tributes to Desmond and Leah Tutu by South African and American artists, Michigan State University Museum and Women of Color Quilters Network, 2016, page 55.","OwnershipF082":"Private","OwnerNameF082a":"Gina Niederhumer","essay":"The design for this quilt was inspired by a published photograph that shows the Archbishop in his home chapel at Soweto, Johannesburg.* What spoke to me about this picture were the colours, both sombre and joyful, as well as the spatial arrangement between the religious symbolism and the man. It occurred to me that this is also a kind of grid that could be applied to Tutu's life as a religious leader, activist, husband of Leah, and icon of our nation. The four sections in my quilt are joined by a cross in which I machine-stitched text excerpts from an essay by Sharon Gelman.
\r\n
\r\n'The thing about Desmond Tutu is that he speaks the truth so well you can really hear him. He gets into your heart and awakens that truth in you. Whenever I listen to him talk, I feel a deep part of me, the best part of me, wake up and come out. He acts like he expects everyone to be as loving as he is, and so who are we to disagree?
\r\n
\r\nI first met Mama Leah in South Africa in 1994. I was in Cape Town at the Parliament buildings for the opening of an exhibit of fine art against apartheid that had been created by artists all around the world ... I was talking with a group of women and one of them said something about, 'Oh, my husband!' And I said... 'Who's your husband?' She said, 'He's the only man at his party wearing a pink dress.'
\r\n
\r\nWhen I set Gelman's words of deep-felt meaning and humour against the cross, the visual symbol of his faith, it suggested, to me, a good description of the life of Leah and Desmond Tutu.**
\r\n
\r\nA box of childhood dress remnants, sent to me by my grandmother in Austria was the beginning of my patchwork and quilting time. Not only was I overcome by the urge to make something from those delicate fabric left-overs, I was also intrigued by the inherent "story-telling" quality in those textile fragments. Most of my work is autobiographical and I have worked intensely with my family narrative in an effort to explain my life to myself. I use needle and thread as a way of "mending" my personal story. Coming from a long line of needlewomen, Niederhumer connects with them through her work and combines past traditions with her fine art practice. Although the impulse for her work might come from the personal and private, the concerns she addresses are part of the larger human condition and applicable in a universal context. Her work has been shown widely within South Africa and at venues abroad.

He maintained an active artistic practice even though he travelled extensively in his occupation as a flight attendant for South African Airlines; he simply took fabrics and a sewing machine with him and used his layovers as intensive work sessions. His work utilises a number of painting and fabric techniques; the result is an aesthetic that can readily be identified as connected to Starke. His work has been exhibited widely in many exhibitions and is in national and international collections. It seemed fitting, then, to create a textile icon of one of South Africa's most iconic and loved figures.
\r\n
\r\nThe three symbolic hearts at the top is the artists' representation of Mr. Tutu's love for God, his wife Leah, and South Africa. The Protea, our national flower, is used to symbolise the country and its people. The dove represents the peaceful transition to democracy. The halo of the icon is an adapted image of the historical South African Greetings Telegram and in this artwork it serves to highlight peace and goodwill but it also references a celebratory welcome to the new South Africa in which Desmond Tutu was a prime and instrumental figure.

In addition to being a profession of Faith and a hope for salvation. The colours in the embroidered cross represent the spirituality and pragmatism evident in the efforts of Desmond and Leah towards the unity of our Rainbow Nation.

\r\nGold is a manifestation of masculine energy, it is optimistic and positive. Gold is associated with high ideals, wisdom, understanding and enlightenment, it is compassionate, generous and giving. It inspires knowledge, spirituality and a deep understanding of the self and the soul.
\r\n
\r\nMagenta is wise, practical and honest and has strong leadership qualities with high expectations of fellow man. It is uplifting and represents universal love at the highest level. It promotes emotional balance, common sense, compassion, kindness, cooperation, gentleness and caring. Magenta is the colour of the noncomformist, the free spirit. It is spontaneous yet resourceful and organised. It is invaluable in negotiating peace and harmony in those that are at odds with one another. Magenta seeks harmony and balance in every aspect of life, and motivates people to achieve their best. Magenta also represents a good sense of humor.
\r\n
\r\nI represent Desmond and serene and gentle Leah in these colours because their personalities typify these qualities.

\r\nSunshine and Shadow
\r\nPretoria, Gauteng, South Africa | Fabric, beads; pieced, beaded
\r\n
\r\nThis metaphoric, collaborative work is based on a photograph of Nelson Mandela in the well-known series by Louise Gubb. The selected image was of his return visit in February 1994 to his Robben Island prison cell. In the Xhosa tribal tradition of Nelson Mandela, white beads represent a link to the deceased ancestors and black beads signify unity and strength. The poignant words beaded on this quilt were spoken by Nelson Mandela during deliberations on his long term of imprisonment. The selection of striped fabrics reference the shadows cast by the prison bars in his cell. They simultaneously evoke piano keys and the words of the song by the musicians Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder:
\r\nEbony and ivory live together in perfect harmony
\r\nSide by side on my piano keyboard, oh Lord, why don't we?

\r\n
\r\nThis is precisely the spirit of the alliance between de Villiers and Talking Beads, a craft artists cooperative. In the quilt, visual language becomes a tool for the association of social and artistic contextual relationships.","photocredit079a1":"Dion Cuyler","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"The copyright belongs to the owner/artist.","ReposFile":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/31-27-196/CHSLM329.jpg"],"zoom":["https://kora.quiltindex.org/files/31-27-196/CHSLM329-zoom.jpg"],"verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Beth Donaldson","dateverified":"2018-04-10","dateverified_era":"CE","Object Associator":"50-147-1","Pattern":"SUNSHINE AND SHADOW","Maker":"[\"DE VILLIERS, CELIA\"]","Date":"2000-2025","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University and Michigan State University Museum","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"Still Image","function":"Image - large display (550 or more pixels)","file medium":"image","file format":"jpeg","legacy_kid":"59-9A-1BC","project_id":"31","form_id":"27","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 00:08:42","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:12:35"},"sort":["SUNSHINE AND SHADOW"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"V65kWZEB8akQsUwetFFR","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"31-27-12","InstProjNameF003a":"South Africa Quilt History Project; East London Museum","InstNameF003":["South Africa Quilt History Project"],"InstInvContrNumF004":"HUM1877","SourceOtherF006a":"Mrs. Janet Hasses, museum cataloguer","DateDataF006b":"6/21/2010","TypeObjOtherF008a":"Pillow sham, patchwork","QuiltTitleF009":"Suffolk Puff","ReasonsF060":["Wedding"],"OtherF060a":"Probably made in 1924 when Millicent Gooch married John Nixon and they came to South Africa to teach bringing the quilt with them.","OwnershipF082":"Public Museum, Library or Institution","OwnerNameF082a":"East London Museum","OwnerAddressF083":"319 Oxford Street","OwnerCityF084":"East London","OwnerProvinceF086a":"Eastern Cape","OwnerCountryF086b":["South Africa"],"OwnerPhoneF088":"043 743 06 86","DateObtainedF088c":"6/21/2010","AccessF080":"Restricted","HolderF080a":"East London Museum","verify":"yes","verifiedby":"Donaldson, Beth","dateverified":"2012-01-18","dateverified_era":"CE","Pattern":"SUFFOLK PUFF","Contributing Institutions":"MATRIX: Center for Humane Arts, Letters and Social Sciences Online at Michigan State University, Michigan State University Museum, Alliance For American Quilts","Publisher":"Quilt Index","Resource Type":"StillImage","ImageTypeF076":"Color","SourceF077":"Digital","legacy_kid":"59-9A-109","project_id":"31","form_id":"27","owner":"1","created_at":"2020-04-26 00:06:45","updated_at":"2024-02-23 19:12:34"},"sort":["SUFFOLK PUFF"]},{"_index":"main_quilt_index_quilt_1_25_","_type":"_doc","_id":"ta5kWZEB8akQsUwetFJR","_score":null,"_source":{"kid":"31-27-369","InstProjNameF003a":"South Africa Quilt History Project; South African Quilters' Guild - National Quilt Search","InstNameF003":["South Africa Quilt History Project"],"InstInvContrNumF004":"SAQHP 11.0063","TypeObjF008":"Finished quilt","QuiltTitleF009":"Suffolk Puff","OverallWidthF12a":"172cm","OverallLengthF012b":"135cm","OverallColorF14b":["Multicolor"],"OtherExDateF023d":"late 20th century","FiberTypesF035":["Cotton"],"UniqueF037b":"Taffeta","QuiltTechF049":["Not quilted"],"QuiltTopF054":"Van Eeden, Mrs. Susan J.F.F.","LocMadeF057a":"Vasco, Cape Town","ProvCountryF057f":["South Africa"],"AcquiredF058":"Gift","ProvenanceF058a":"This suffolk puff quilt was made for Frikkie Conradie, Grandson of Mrs. Van Eeden when he was about 13 years old. Grappling with right and wrong in human relationships has been an integral part of Desmond Tutu's life's work. This is a self-searching embroidered banner rather than a traditional quilt format as it exposes and uncovers the history of its own making. In this sense it serves as a metaphor for accountability, forgiveness, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission - of which the Archbishop was the chairman during 1996.

Every one of the multiple knots revealed in this artwork has been doubled as a token of the bond of love and respect between Desmond and Leah Tutu and their inextricable tangle with South African history. Knots are a symbol of binding, but also of fettering. Embedded in the very fabric and texture of his life is the significant shadowy portrait of Leah.

Kris sketched the design from several on-line interviews, observing the expressive and empathetic body language of the Arch, as he is affectionately known. Even though the magenta robe is obligatory to his status, it suits the non-comformist Archbishop extremely well, a hue mixed of passionate red and introspective violet. A hardy green fabric represents the peace offering of the olive branch. The polka dot edge is a wink at the defiant and clownish humour in Desmond Tutu.

De Villiers, of South Africa, and van 't Hof, of Belgium, have recently worked on several collaborative projects, including this one. De Villiers has taught art at higher education institutions in South Africa and Belgium and her artwork has been exhibited widely in South Africa and many other countries. Van 't hof lectures in art at Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Antwerp, and has been a guest lecturer in many other universities. He has been the organiser of international workshops and study trips promoting transnational artworks and the collaboration of creative players in the art field. His art is in private and corporate collections in many countries.

He constantly raises awareness of global crises like AIDS, global warming, and the need to advance peace and reconciliation worldwide. He also has the ability to convey difficult messages with clarity and compassion that make him a loved and respected man of our time. He has also proved himself as an inspired and prayerful leader whose spirituality is at the root of his concern. Mr. Tutu played a huge role in uniting white and black South Africans in a peaceful manner.*

\r\nPriceless Threads of A Nation
\r\nCape Town, Western Cape, South Africa Hand dyed fabric, digital images on ink-jet printer enhanced with Derwent Inktense pencils and blocks; fused, machine appliquéd, free-motion thread sketched and free-motion quilted
\r\n
\r\nHaving trained and worked as a social worker during the apartheid years, the theme of this exhibition spoke to me and I simply had to make a contribution. My training and years working amongst the communities of the Western Cape focused on children and families and more specifically those communities ravaged by poverty and injustice. As I continue my work amongst adolescents in an educational setting I remain painfully aware of the challenges that our youth face on a daily basis. My quilting is both a way of coping with the stress and challenges of my job and a vehicle of expression and catharsis.
\r\n
\r\nIncluded in the quilt are Madiba’s powerful words on the subjects of poverty, education, and children and images of informal settlements, children, and the map of Africa. Madiba reminds us that one of the most powerful tools in the fight against injustice is education. Lest we forget, Madiba reminded us that the way in which a nation treats its children speaks volumes about our society. The work started by this great icon is not complete; his legacy is merely the beginning of our journey.","essay":"Madiba’s contributions to the issues of poverty, injustice and the plight of children are depicted using machine applique, thread – sketching and digital images enhanced with Derwent Inktense pencils. In acceptance, there is peace. Peace is the most basic starting point for the advancement of humankind. I tried to capture this essence in this quilt design by using doves - a symbol of peace - and the open arms of the figure to represent love and understanding.
\r\n
\r\nI started quilting in 2000 and entered my first project, a cushion, into a sewing competition where I won a box of fabric paint. By 2003, after winning a sewing machine in another competition, I was hooked on sewing day and night. My quilts have been in several exhibitions in South Africa and abroad; I was priviledged to take part in the "Conscience of the Human Spirit" exhibition celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela.
