Upper Saddle River, New Jersey transformed over the centuries from a relatively sparse Lenape Indian settlement in the 1600s to a primarily Dutch pioneer farming area with sandstone homes through the 1800s.

By the early 1900s it also became a summer destination for city dwellers to escape the crowded streets of New York. The town went through a dramatic post-war development in the 1950s. Today, as a small suburban town dotted with historic homes, it retains the narrow winding roads, beautiful trees, and babbling brooks that attracted those early settlers of long ago.
