Wonder Packages Go Fast at Cost of Only 49c Each

by Edith B. Crumb
This department seeks to give assistance to all who are interested in beautifying their homes and will be glad to answer questions pertaining to interior decoration. In order to serve all who, seek advice promptly no more than three problems will be discussed in any one reply. Readers are invited to write to this department as often as they wish, but to limit each letter to three questions. State your question clearly write on only one side of the paper, enclosing a self-addressed, stamped envelope and address Beauty in the Home department, Detroit News. Letters with their answers will be published for the benefit of all homemakers but names and addresses will not be made public.

WOMEN who like to embroider, and there are just hundreds of them who know just what to do with a tiny design to make their homes attractive.

Who could resist a wreath and bow-know design like that shown in the large illustration? No one who loved dainty things with touches of delicate colors and tints. That wreath is not only beautiful but—and this is certainly in its favor—it is easily and quickly embroidered. The flowers and leaves are done in the lazy-daisy stitch, the centers in French knots and the bow-knot and intertwining ribbon in a coarse over-and-over stitch. Can’t you see how rapidly that could be done?

LUNCHEON SET.
And as for it’s use, well it would be nice for a pillow top, bridge table cover, luncheon cloth, towel (with the initial in the center of the wreath), or on moiré lingerie cases.

And here is a suggestion, if you should use it for a luncheon set, just put a wreath in one corner of the cloth, then in one corner of each napkin you could use just the bow-knot and the two little flowers that are grouped with it.

On white linen, the flowers might be rose with yellow centers, the leaves green and the ribbon blue.

The other two designs shown with the wreath are just bits that any home-maker would find a use for if just a small amount of decoration is desired.

DOZEN LARGE SHEETS.
These three designs and many others are contained on one of the 12 large sheets of the Wonder Package. Each sheet measure 24x36 inches and the small illustration will show you how closely together the designs are arranged so that as many as possible are included.

In the 12 sheets there are over 800 different designs and each one may be used a dozen or more times. No hot iron is necessary in transferring these designs for all that is needed is a damp sponge, cloth or piece of cotton and a spoon or other smooth hard object. The pattern has only to be dampened and rubbed slightly with the spoon.

FOR BABY CLOTHES.
Anyone interested in making baby clothes will appreciate the designs shown in the small illustration for there are patterns for the decoration of bibs, carriage robes, carriage straps, pillows, etc., and all of the type that may be done easily and quickly in either all white or delicate colors.

And these designs are not just for embroidery because they may be applied to wood, metal, glass, pottery, cloth, paper, oil-cloth or any flat surface that requires a decoration. For that reason they may be used for painting as well as sewing.

And remember that the new low price of these packages is but 49 cents if called for and 56 cents if you wish to have it mailed to you. You may call for it at the main office of The Detroit News, Second and Lafayette or at The Detroit News Public Service Bureau in either the Majestic Building or the General Motors Building.

MAY BE MAILED.
If you would prefer to have it mailed to you just fill out the coupon which is in this column for your convenience and send it with stamps or a money order to the Beauty in the Home Department The Detroit News.

And don’t wait too long before sending or calling for this package as the supply is limited and they are going very fast. Wonder Package Paragraphs.
WELL, those Wonder Package letters are coming in as early as this and here are few from homemakers who are finding them useful and attractive:

MAYBE I’ll be the first one to write in about the Wonder Package. After hearing about it over the radio I called for it at the Majestic Building and now I am only sorry that I did not take advantage of the offer when it first came out for even the first price for it was a bargain.

Of course, I am delighted with all of the designs, but one thing that is valuable to me is the illustrated sheet and description of the embroidery stitches. There are 21 different kinds and now I am going to practice on some that I have wanted to make for a long time.

I always thought that Roman cut work would be too difficult for me to attempt, but it certainly looks simple from the description and it is so well illustrated there can be no mistake if one follows out every detail carefully.

I never had any trouble with small French knots, but the long ones have never been popular with me because I could not get the knack of them, and now I see where I made my mistake and will start right in making roses with this stitch. I know that I will be so enthusiastic that I will probably write in again, but I did want to drop you a note. I think you ought to say more about the description of the stitches because I do not think the women realize what a fine part of the Package this really is.
MRS. M. J. L.

Yes, Mrs. L., you are the first Wonder Package worker to write in and I am glad you spoke about the embroidery stitches being explained. That is something that every needle-worker will like—to be able to make all the stitches, and there are 21, as you say, illustrated and described. There are the Venetian ladderwork or Italian cut work, eyelet stitch, solid Kensington stitch and many others—even fagoting that is so attractive in dresses and blouses now.

Thank you for writing in and when you get to working with the patterns and make more plans I do hope that you will write in again.

THIS letter may not belong in the Wonder Package Paragraphs because it is not about sewing or embroidery, but it is something I think will be of interest to you.

My husband has found a use for the Wonder Package. He put initials on the door of our car by using the transfers from the alphabet sheets. He transferred three small ones and then filled in the outline with enamel. Our car is gray with just a little red trimming and so he made the initials red; and he did an expert job.

He is also going to help me put designs on the breakfast room furniture and the tea, coffee and sugar cans and in a few weeks we will have a kitchen looking just like new.
MRS. R. N.

I certainly thank you for writing in about that idea of the initials on the car for that is one suggestion that has not been made for the Wonder Package and I am sure you will find that many will follow your example.

Quilt Club Corner.
The votes are beginning to come in thick and fast for the “Trip Around the World” and by Monday morning I want to see a big stack of cards or letters about this so that I can go ahead and prepare the leaflet if it is wanted.

If you want this quilt pattern before the latter part of the summer when the Horoscope will be finished, please drop a card or note to the Beauty in the Home Department or the Quilt Club Corner and say that you like the idea. By having it in a few weeks you will still be able to make it before the Contest. It is a quilt that is easily made and lots of fun to work on and not one bit monotonous.

Be sure that you have your note mailed so that it will be here Monday or Tuesday at the latest because that will decide the matter.

Quilt Club Corner to Be On Radio
WOULD you like to have letters to the Quilt Club Corner read over the radio? If so, write immediately so that they may be here in time for the broadcast which is at 11:45 every Wednesday over WWJ. Listen in for your own and others and then write and tell the Corner how you like this idea.
