Quilts and Birthday Cake Join for Party

By EDITH B. CRUMB.

THAT quilters laugh at superstition is evidenced by those shown in the accompanying illustration, for they are perfectly happy to have a meeting consisting of 13 members. It was Mrs. Barclay’s birthday when they met on Wednesday—but she experienced no bad luck. A beautifully decorated cake helped to celebrate the anniversary.

The quilt on the frame is a Dresden Plate made in just a little different fashion. Every other wedge is of material with a white ground and fine design in black. Not all of these wedges are of the same pattern, but there is the same general distribution of design. The alternating wedges are of various colors and designs of material.

In the center of each plate there is being quilted a conventional four-leaf clover design, this having a double outline. The single leaves of this are also used throughout the block.

It was interesting to note how faintly yet clearly the quilting design is marked. Mrs. Smith explained that she uses the regulation tailor’s chalk which is dampened slightly, thus making a dull ecru line. Inasmuch as this line is easy to follow and may be brushed off when the quilting is finished, the idea seems very good.

On one wall of the room in which this quilt was set up was the Log Cabin quilt which Mrs. Smith entered in The Detroit News Quilt Contest—one which won a ribbon award.

The quilt top as shown in the illustration was also entered in the Contest.

Each member pieces a top as she wants to have it and then as many as can help her with the quilting, so when there are too many present for the quilting frame there is always something for everyone to do.

Saves Scraps.
I have been saving scraps to make a quilt for over a year, but never dreamed how interesting they were until I saw all the lovely ones at the Exhibit. Now I am going to start right in as soon as I get the patterns for the Trip, the Double Wedding Ring and Dresden Plate. I want to make those three first of all. I saw and copied some very nice color combinations at the Exhibit. If I can make the Trip as lovely as some of the nice ones I saw there I will be very proud.

The three patterns you have selected are very attractive and also unusually interesting to make. When these are finished you will surely be proud of them, and then I know that you will start two or three more, for a quilt-maker is never finished.

Thank you for writing in to the Corner and please don’t get so busy on your quilting that you won’t have time to send another letter soon, for I shall look forward to hearing from you again.
