Appliqued Rose Medallion

By Edith B. Crumb.

For this quilt you may use either egg shell or plain white material for the background. For this you will require approximately 4 1/2 yards.

The plain part of the applique and the figured part will each require approximately two yards each.

In the large illustration is shown one-half of the design for one block; and a quilt five blocks wide and six long will be about 60 inches by 72 inches, finished size. For the background cut 30 blocks, each 12 inches square.

Now take one of these square blcoks. Fold it in half lengthwise and crosswise, so as to have it divided into four equal squares, and this will also show you where the exact center of the blocks is. Make a light pencil mark at the point where the two lnes meet in the center and remember that this should correspond to the center of the circle in the design.

How To Trace.
Next take a piece of thin white paper (thin enough to see this pattern through) and fold it in half crosswise. Lay this paper on the pattern on this leaflet so that the lengthwise fold is in line with the line going through the center. Using a soft fine pencil trace the design onto the white paper. Fold the paper now on the center crease you have already made so that the tracing is on the outside of the paper. Holding the folded paper to the window with the pencil marked side toward the pane trace the design on the side of the paper nearest you. When you unfold the paper you have the complete pattern.

Thumb-tack the cloth to a firm smooth surface and lay your design over it so that the point in the center of the circle corresponds to the center point in the cloth. With a sharp pencil make a very light marking on the cloth, to show you where the applique is going. If you are careful not to "smudge" you may use carbon paper for this purpose.

The leaflet may be cut up for patterns for the small pieces; or you may use just one-fourth inch all around the parts to be appliqued. Apply the tip of the bud near the corner first, then the plain part, then the figured parts between the heart-shaped pieces, the large plain piece which will look like four hearts linked together, then the four figured pieces of the same shape only smaller and finally the circular piece in the center.

Color Combination.
The plain pieces may be light green and the figured a checked rose and white gingham.

Another way to make this would be to have the plain large heart shaped pieces of plain rose and the figured of the checked, the only green being the bud and the center circle. If you use this way of working out the design, you will require about 1 1/2 yards of the plain green.
