Small Compactly Arranged House
Has Full Basement
Sliding Doors Save Wall Space
Layout Shows All Areas Plannded
This shows Detroit News house plan No. 52-4 which is for a one-floor structure with full basement. It contains large living area with dining "L," three bedrooms, kitchen with "L" for breakfast table and rear terrace which may be used for out-of-door dining.

Today's house design which is Detroit News plan No. 52-4, is small but so compactly arranged that even though it is a small house it includes three bedrooms.

It is a one-floor structure with full basement and has a front entry from which one may enter every room in the house without crossing through another, for each opens onto this entry "L" hall leading from it.

At the left of the entry is a large living room with dining "L" large enough to permit the use of a drop-leaf table for dining.

Interesting features
A fireplace in the outside wall of the living room and a large window with flankers at the front add interst to the scheme and provide an attractive background for furniture arrangement. A sliding door separates the dining area from the kitchen, which means that there is no waste wall space in the former and that a chest might be placed against the wall at right of the door to the kitchen.

Two large adjoining walls in the living room make possible a separate grouping of furniture - perhaps sectional sofa, corner table and coffee table.

Several groupings make the room more practical for it permits several activities at the same time - conversation, card-playing and for those who wish to write or study, the dining L with its large table would be an ideal spot.

Sliding Doors
Each of the three bedrooms would accommodate either full sized or twin beds and the closet space is especially large in the room at the rear, being equipped with three sliding doors. Two sliding doors enclose that in the center bedroom and a conventional hinged type is used a the smaller closet opening off the front bedroom.

Front and rear bedrooms have windows arranged for cross ventilation and two large windows in one casing give sufficient light and air for the center bedroom.

Four closets opening off the entry and hall of this house would be a joy to the home maker who likes a place for everything and everything in its place.

Two Linen Closets
Directly in front of the entrance door and near the door to the living room is a closet for wraps. Two linen closets opening off the bedroom hall and a broom closet is also installed in this hall at entrance to the kitchen. The linen closet near the bathroom has an opening from the bathroom as well as the hall side.

The kitchen is so arranged that the working equipment is of equal distance from the dining nook in the kitchen and that in the living room. Another advantage of its arrangement is that it is near the door to the rear terrace which would make out-of-door dining a convenience.
