‘Corner’ Party Over WWJ Enjoyed by Quilt makers

Edith B. Crumb

The radio Quilt Club Corner party was only supposed to last half an hour but for me it has lasted a week because every day there have been letters and cards from listeners answering the roll call. It was fun to be back together in the good old fashioned way and don’t you know how happy I have been to receive all those letters on how much happier I will be if I receive many more so as to make this Quilt Club Corner a great big lasting one. It is only letters but must have them in order to keep alive and I know that each of you will do your share.

Wouldn’t you like to read some of the letters and cards that came in? I knew you would, and here they are:

From Mrs. J. Dickerson, 7311 Eimhurst avenue, Detroit, came a lovely Christmas card showing a little boy dressed in red and mailing a Christmas package. Her car says “Yes, indeed I was at the Quilt club Tuesday afternoon. So glad we are back on the air again. Wishing the members all the good things of Christmas and a Happy New Year.”

Mrs. F. Robbertson, 1962 Grand Avenue Detroit, sent another pretty Christmas card showing a holiday party gathering. There is a Christmas tree with candles on it, mysterious package waiting to be opened and the guests are dressed in old time hoop skirts, ribbons, bows, etc. Mrs. Robertson says: “I was at your Quilt Club Corner party this afternoon and enjoyed it very much. Am afraid I have neglected your corner this year, but sickness in my family kept me busy to even think about other things. Was not able to go to the Exhibit and was so disappointed to miss seeing all the beautiful work. I even sent all my beautiful pieces to a member so will have to make a new start; but I enjoy the Corner and wish it every success. It is a marvel to me how some of the members finds time to make as many quilts as they do. I quite envy them. Best of the season wishes to you and all the members.”

Mrs. B. Gabriel, 5530 Gulford street, Detroit, wrote her card at 2:30pm right at the close of the Quilt Club Party. She says, “I just listened to you program and enjoyed it very much. To be frank, I want to say that I had to go our this afternoon and stayed in to listen instead. I heard all about the Brother-Sister quilts and though of making them myself. I thought I would be the first to congratulate you."

Mrs. Gabriel was almost the first, but I have a letter from Mrs. Mary Selcoski, which she we wrote at 2:20 and said “I’m at the radio, and oh! How happy I am to hear the Corner again I’ve just heard you skip all over town and hope you’ll skip over to see me too someday. I’ll be working on my Nosegay then. They are playing that old spinning song how can you expect my fingers to keep up with the music? That must be a pretty quilt for the boys bed you are just describing. Isn’t Miss Davies friendly? I hope to hear more of her in our future programs."

From Mrs. Annie E. Taylor, 5093 Navy Avenue came a card which said, “I listened in to your broadcast today and enjoyed it very much and hope it will be on the air every week, now we must be busy with other quilts again. With best wishes.”

Mrs. W. E. Hubbard, Box 245, Roseville, Mich. also listened in and sent a card saying “Your program Tuesday was very enjoyable, the orchestra and solos being especially appropriate. While I may not be able to do as much patchwork this winter on account of my eyes, I shall enjoy listening in and reading letters in The News."

The space is filling up so fast that I will not be able to put in all the letters; but there was a note from Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Galton (the Quilt Club sister) saying that they were at the party with their ears wide open and sat up and “took notice" when they heard their names mentioned.

Gabrielle Baecheroot whose present address is 3573 Hancock avenue, east Detroit, instead of St. Claire shores, wrote a nice little note and so did Mrs. P H Flint 3384 Marindale avenue south Detroit she had a caller (the insurance man) just five minutes before time for the party to start and was worried because she thought he would not get his receipt made out and be on his way in time for the party. But she was in on time.

Mrs. James Little 131 Forest Street Catham Ont. also attended the party and wrote a nice little note about being present.

Mrs. C. Walke 2140 McDougall avenue, Detroit wrote a card in bright red ink saying that she attended the broadcast and enjoyed the songs and music so much.

Mrs. WM. Russell of Richmond, Mich. (who is ill now and wanting notes, although she has some) attended the party and wrote a cheery little note after it .

Mrs. Nichlos, who gives no address, wrote a very nice note about the party and so did Mrs. C P Alford of 6769 Goldsmith avenue, Detroit.

This is all there is time or space for today. And now give me a happy Christmas by writing lots of letters to the Quilt Club Corner. Won’t you?

From a Shut-In.
Dear Miss Crumb: It is some time since I wrote to the Corner, I received quite a few letters from the Quilt Club Corner and now I would like to exchange pieces-I have so many alike.

I am sorry I could not get to see the quilt show.

Your shut in quilt fan,
Mrs. Walther Therrian,
Box 358 St. Ignace, Mich.

The exchanging is starting again, Mrs. Therrian, and I am sure that you will have plenty of opportunities to trade lots of patches.

It certainly is too bad that you could not attend the quilt show for you would have had such a good time. Perhaps if there is one next year you will find a way to get here.

A “Thank You” Note.
Dear Miss Crumb: Will you please acknowledge the receipt of quilt patches from the kind lady who signed her letter “Wyandotte?” Many thanks to her and the others who sent me patches. I will answer by letter to the ones who sent their names. Thank you.
“TIED DOWN” (Lillian Legeret)
Goodells, Mich.

The “Wyandotte” send will be happy to know that you received the patches she sent and I know that the other senders will be delighted to hear from you. And be sure to write to us again.

Quilted Pillow Makes Nice Christmas Gift
Few things do more to add a luxurious note to a room than dainty boudoir pillows. The Beauty in the Home editor has designed one which will make an ideal Christmas gift, because it is dainty, effective, and easy to make. This pattern is ready for you on a leaflet called Quilted Silk Boudoir Pillow which you may have for the asking.

Two squares of silk or satin, a little cheese cloth for the pattern and a few hours of work are all that is needed to make this attractive gift.

Send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Beauty in the Home Editor of the News or call in person at the Detroit News Public bureau in the Majestic Building or the General Motors Building.
