Unusually Fine Quilt Exhibit Held by Rebecca Jane Circle

By Edith B. Crumb

If all the quilt shows which are held in May are as successful as the one held yesterday at the Boulevard Congregational Church, Warren and West Grand Boulevard, this will surely be an ideal month for church societies.

This show was under the auspices of the Rebeca Jane Circle and Mrs. George Tager was chairman of the exhibit.

Under her supervision almost 120 quilts were collected and this is just about a record for a church quilt show. And so lovely was each quilt that the judge had a difficult task in determining which should receive prizes.

Prizes Awarded.
The first prize for the finished piece quilts was awarded to Mrs. F.B. Camburn for a blue and white quilt in the pieced Star design; the second one being given to Mrs. W. J Masters of Walloon Lake, Michigan. The first for the finished appliqued quilts was given to Mrs. Charles Voelker for her jonquil appliqued design and the second to Mrs. Mayme Scroggins of Walloon Lake, Michigan, for a conventional pattern. Both quilts which came from Walloon Lake were quilted by...(clipping cut-off)

(clipping cut-off)... won the second prize in the antique section.

Heirloom Corner.
There was a corner occupied by lovely old heirlooms, these attracting considerable attention. There were Benninton porcelain vases, old Bibles, children's dresses-very long and every stitch made by hand and a quaint little rocking chair.

In another corner aprons were being made and sold, the candy counter had a busy time of it and there was also counter of holders with a patchwork star for decoration, pillow cases and towels with embroidered motifs giving them colorful notes.

Fortunately, this church had two large rooms in which to hole the display, for this allowed every quilt to be shown to advantage.

About Quilting Trip.
Dear Miss Crumb and Beatrice: I heard your talk over the radio. I always enjoy your helpful talks and the letters from the members.

The Quilt Club Members are inquiring how to quilt the Trip Around the World. Now, I will tell you how I did mine. I want to help others if I can. First, I fastened the back on the quilting frame. Then I got a white blanket. I think it is better than a batter or wadding because it will stand the washing. Then I put the top on, basted it together, then I took it off the frames and quilt it to the hoop. I used a card table to lay the quilt on. I sit down and draw the card table close, and I can work in comfort. I find it easier than quilting on the frame. I quilted through the center of each block around the center of each block around the quilt. I started in the center of the quilt and worked out so that there wouldn't be any bulges. I left the outside edge scalloped and it is very pretty when finished.

Now if you think this will be of any help to the ladies, please pass it on.

That is very nice of you to write in just how you quilted your Trip Around the World. So many do not like to use the large frames and have wondered how successful the hoops were.

If you did not have large frames on which to lay out the quilt it could be done on the floor, using thumb tacks to keep it in position while stretching it.

The basting must be done firmly and the lines not only cross-wise and lengthwise but diagonally in order that there may be no slipping.
