Unity Club Contributes to Day Room

By Edith B. Crumb

Mrs. Mary Lakin, 1600 St. Clair avenue, came into the office recently with a large package and pulled out a perfectly beautiful quilt. It was made from the Rose Medallion design, rose and green on white, lined and bound with light green.

She didn't bring this in just to show to us - no, indeed! She brought it to give to us for Needles for Defense and we sold it and made almost $50, for which we have Mrs. Lakin to thank. We certainly appreciate her generosity. She says it doesn't pay to buy anything but the best material, so here is a quilt which will stand plenty of laundering.

Mrs. Eleanor Twyman, 15094 Washburn avenue, sent a check for $16.50 to be used in any way for the room at Fort Custer. This is a donation from the Unity Club, of which she is chairman. There are about 18 members, some of whom are business and professional women and others who used to be in the business world.

The members work once a week for the purpose of planning charity projects. They have some needy families on their list for whom they make provision, and do al they can for organizations who care for those who are less fortunate. We are happy to feel that they wish to help us in our project for the boys at camp.

When I was asked what was needed I told the chairman that I was buying some paint for the room. I heard that the boys wanted colored walls and some units were selecting blue and others green, so I asked the boys who were to have our room which they preferred and they said "yellow" - so yellow it will be.

A notice from the American Red Cross tells us that the sewing, knitting and surgical dressing departments will close at 4 p. m. during June, July and August.

Please remember that we wish to have all sewed garments returned to us so that we may hand them in to the Red Cross the last week in June. This is important and we are looking forward, with your assistance, to clearing our records as far as all former projects for sewing are concerned. This has nothing to do with the last two sewing projects.

Fine Quilt Is Donated
Mrs. Mary Lakin, 1600 St. Clair avenue, who has been a member of the Quilt Club Corner for seven years, donated one of her 19 hand-made quilts to the Needles for Defense. This was sold for $50 and the money put in the treasury.
