Needles for Defense

By Edith B. Crumb

Every Thursday a group of women from Hurlbut Baptist Church and Lutheran Memorial Church meet in the basement of the latter and sew for Needles for Defense.

They have already turned in several layettes and Monday are sending in six more layettes (90 garments), and five lap robes.

Making these is not enough for these women to do. They want to furnish the material and do this by earning the money for it. They have had heaps of scraps of material given to them, out of which they make rugs, and table mats. These they sell, and use the money to buy materials for the layettes.

They also buy money for the making of quilts. They have made six of these, all by hand, and sold them to earn more money for material.

They have no intention of taking a vacation for summer or winter, during the war. They think that they must keep at their part in defending our country.

Many of the women in the picture you will recoginize as old friends of the Quilt Club Corner. There is Maude S. Raymond (as happy as ever), and with her are Mrs. Sadie Lanstra, Mrs. A. Klein and Mrs. Iva Mae Harris.

Some are making hand-made lace to be put on the small garments for which we have been distributing patterns. All their articles are made with as much care and patience as if they were being made for the children and grandchildren of these women.

They bring pot luck lunches and someone makes coffee, so the noon hour is looked forward to with eagerness. But they don't stop long for lunch. They couldn't waste much time and turn out the stack of work that I saw out there the other day.

Yesterday Mrs. H. D. Wright, 1036 E. Grand Blvd., brought in 12 pairs of panties and one navy slip-over sweater. She furnished all the material for all of these and we are very grateful for her generosity.

Mrs. Sidney Jones, 757 Newport avenue, brough in five pairs and 29 women sent in a huge stack of beautifully made baby blankets.
