1933 Sears National Quilt Contest Discoveries

Merikay Waldovogel and Barbara Brackman researched the Sears National Quilt Contest. Sears Roebuck & Co. with headquarters in Chicago was a financial backer of the 1933 World’s Fair, known as The Century of Progress Exposition. To drum up interest in the Fair nationwide, Sears announced a national quilt contest in January 1933 with prizes totaling $7500.

The photo shows the first place winners of the 1933 Sears National Quilt Contest on display in 1934 when the Century of Progress Exposition opened for a second summer. Sears requested that the top regional winners loan their quilts for the special exhibit. The quilt at the far left might be Star of the Bluegrass, the grand prize winner. Clarke Family Quilt Collection

1934

The Clarke Family quilt collection, given to Michigan State University Museum in 1986 by Dr. Harriet A. Clarke and her brother, George M. Clarke, includes forty-five quilts and quilt tops completed between 1926 and 1946 by Bozena Vilhemina Clarke, her daughter Laura May Clarke, and daughter-in-law Emilie Ann Clarke.

Frugal and Fashionable: Quiltmaking During the Great Depression

Although there is some truth to the frugal stereotypes of "Depression Quilts", the current research being conducted across America by quilt projects indicates that our view of Depression quilts is far too narrow. Even the name is wrong, as there is much evidence that the fashion for making scrappy, pastel quilts dates to about the mid-1920s and the style persisted until about the 1950s.
